But the moment he heard Ryan’s voice, his eyes snapped open. “Ryan, you’re awake!” He sounded happy.
Dad…”
The boy had been holding it together for so long, and now that his father was right there in front of him, all of it came apart at once. Tears rolled down his face in a steady stream. “You finally came for me. You came, you came, you came. Dad, there was this awful man down there. He grabbed my water bottle and drank all my water!
And he kept saying you weren’t going to come back for us. I knew he was lying. I knew it.” Sevyn’s expression shifted sharply. “Someone took your water bottle?”
“Yes!” Ryan’s lips were cracked and peeling from dehydration. “He was so mean. He bullied me.”
The picture snapped together all at once in Sevyn’s mind.
He’d been played.
He’d actually believed that man’s story, and the entire time, the man had been tormenting his son down in the dark.
Ryan’s cracked lips broke Sevyn’s heart on the spot. He immediately pulled out the small bottle of water Ella had given him, the one he’d been holding onto without letting himself drink a drop of it.
‘I’m sorry, son. I should’ve been there.”
He ran his hand over Ryan’s forehead. The fever Robin’s medicine had broken was completely
gone now.
He tipped a few small sips of water into Ryan’s mouth, watched the boy drift back under into a deep, heavy sleep, and let his expression settle into something cold and controlled.
He turned. The man from the rubble was standing not far away, his eyes fixed on the water bottle in Sevyn’s hand with barely-veiled longing.

He cleared his throat, casting around for a conversation opener. Then Sevyn said. “What do

Then why were you bullying him down there?”
Geoffrey’s pupils contracted.
That little snitch had already talked, in the thirty seconds between waking up and now.
He forced a smile onto his face and kept his voice steady. “Sevyn, what are you even saying: Why would I bully your son? He’s a sweet kid.”
Sevyn looked at him with steady eyes. “He says you took his water bottle and drank it. He also
told him I wasn’t coming back for him.” ay’s you
The kid remembered everything.
Every word.
Geoffrey had been counting on a fever-muddled eight-year-old to forget the details, and the oy had apparently catalogued every single thing like a little court reporter.
He still had plans here. He still needed Sevyn’s goodwill to work his way closer to Robin’s group. One child’s account was not going to derail this.
Geoffrey let his face shift into something wounded and earnest. “Sevyn, you’ve got me wrong here. I had absolutely no intention of hurting Ryan. I heard him saying he was getting sleepy. I thought, if he and his mom both fell asleep and you managed to find them, how would anyone know to call out?
