Over on the other side of the wreckage, Henry had been running his ability a full wreath for nearly an entire day, and even with the breakthrough behind him, the weaned for t his temples throbbing in a dull, relentless rhythm.
“Still not feeling it?” Robin asked.
Henry gave her a flat look. “You try scanning an entire collapse zone and blowing things up a day. See how your head feels.”
He had it the worst out of them today.
“My, my,” Robin said lightly. “Someone’s feeling bold.
“I was going to offer you something good to drink, too.”
Henry’s expression shifted immediately.
Everyone on the team had learned by now that when Robin produced something for you to consume, it was exceptional without exception. Nobody asked where any of it came from. They just accepted it.
He cleared his throat with great dignity. “Right, I may have been a little short just now. Fatigue does things to a person. What was it you were going to give me?”
Robin laughed. “That might actually be the most gracious thing you’ve ever said.”
She pulled a Mental Potion from the system and tossed it over. “Drink this.”
***g and Bays toples dissolved as if cool, clear water had been poured directly over * pain washing it away completely. A sensation moved through his entire body, deep and hold like every cell had opened itself and drawn in something it desperately needed.
And then something even more remarkable happened. The breakthrough he’d pushed though earlier, soll raw and unsteady at the edges, seemed to settle and consolidate. His grip on his ability sharpened into something more precise and controlled.
He raised his head with wide eyes. “L.”
Roban smiled. How do you feel?”
Henry was genuinely speechless for a moment.
He’d never had this particular potion before, and the effect was staggering.
“Why didn’t you have this out earlier?”
Robin gave him a flat look. “And spoil you? That would’ve been far too easy.”
Henry stared at her.
The group was exhausted, and everyone agreed to rest for the night near the edge of the ruins.
Robin and the others set up their tents, and Ivan volunteered for night watch without being asked.
He didn’t say much, but the quiet anxiety sitting beneath his surface was plain enough for anyone paying attention to see.
Every member of the team had grown into something formidable. Even Henry, whose ability had always been unpredictable, had found real control today.
And Ivan still didn’t know what his own ability was actually for.
