Chapter 426 Useless Crowd

Ryan fed in Sevy’s arms and looked up at the man with complete, unflinching serioness “Nit, that lady could’ve left every single one of you buried in that rubble yesterday Instead, her whole group wore themselves out getting you free” His voice didn’t waver “Not one of you told her thank you. And now you want her to stay and protect you for as long as you need

My teacher taught us in kindergarten to be grateful for what others do for us. She also taught us to handle our own problems ourselves.” He held the man’s gaze steady. “Either you missed those lessons, or nobody ever bothered to teach you. Because a kid my age figured all of this out a long time ago.”

The man’s face went scarlet. He opened his mouth. “You’re just a kid! What do you even know about-

He never finished the sentence. Sevyn tightened his grip on Ryan, and one pulse of his ability later, the two of them materialized beside a car parked roughly sixty-five feet away.

He needed a vehicle, and he needed one now. Staying close to Robin was the only thing that mattered.

The man still wanted to press on, but Sevyn’s move had already done the real damage.

The crowd shifted. Whatever resentment had been simmering died the instant everyone remembered that cars weren’t plentiful here. Wait too long, and they’d be completely stranded.

Every last complaint evaporated. People scattered in every direction, each one moving faster than the person beside them, terrified of being the one left behind.

Up in the armored vehicle, Ella leaned forward. “Robin, are you actually trying to help those people?”

Robin kept her eyes fixed on the road ahead. “Henry spent an entire day digging them out of that wreckage. I wasn’t about to let all of that go to waste.” She paused briefly. “I put the path in front of them. Whether they take it is their own choice.”

Monica glanced back and let out a dry, quiet laugh. “Well, they’ve got more sense than I gave them credit for. They’re already keeping up.”

Ella turned to look.

A procession of vehicles stretched out behind them, materializing one after another from the distance. Right at the very front sat Sevyn.

The corner of Robin’s mouth curved upward.

Northreach Base wasn’t anywhere close. The armored vehicle pressed steadily forward for well

over two hours before the faint outline of distant horizon.

finally

Pal’s eyes went wide. “Northreach Base? What are you planning to do there? He turned Robin, visibly thrown. “You’re not seriously thinking of dropping those people off there

“They’ve got just over a hundred members inside, which sounds small, but every single one of them is a top-tier fighter. Every last one.” He shook his head. “The people following behind us are regular survivors with average abilities at best. Northreach Base taking them in simply isn’t going to happen.”

Ella stared at him. “Pal, it genuinely sounds like you’ve been all over the place. Where exactly are you from that you’d already know about a base like this?”

Pal looked away. “I passed through this area once before.” He paused, then seemed to choose his next words more carefully. “The base’s director has a personality that’s extremely difficult to deal with.

“Before the apocalypse, Northreach Base was a scientific research facility,” he continued, his tone weighted with unease. “Top-tier security systems, a government-sanctioned weapons arsenal, the full setup. From the very first day everything collapsed, they were ahead of every other survivor group by a mile.

“And because their machinery stayed operational and their technology held together, their scientific capabilities haven’t fallen far behind at all.”

Pal made a face. “Robin, researchers like that carry a very particular kind of arrogance. They’re deeply exclusive, and outsiders don’t get in easily.”

Robin wasn’t surprised that Pal knew all of this with such precision. Frankly, it would’ve been strange if he didn’t.

In her previous life, he’d been the single most well-connected information broker she’d ever

known.

She smiled. “Nobody said anything about bringing those people to Northreach Base.”

She already knew their membership criteria from her previous life, whether Pal spelled it out

or not.

“I’m going to Northreach Base to find an old acquaintance. That’s it.”

A small, breathless sound of wonder escaped Erin.

The longer she spent at Robin’s side, the more the truth of it settled over her. Even with the family connection between them, the Neels had apparently known nothing about Robin at all.

And Robin’s strength dwarfed every expectation anyone had ever set for her.

If the Nicks ever find sot that the girl they’ne always looked down on has become something like this, the regret will halling them
