End of the World? I'm the Boss novel Chapter 425

Chapter 425 His Promise

Robin waved a hand. “The fact that you mean it already says a lot. Actually, I do think the something I’ll need from you.”

Sevyn straightened up immediately. “Just name it!”

“Not right now.” Robin said. “Take care of your wife and your kid first. We can talk once they’re a little better.”

Somewhere in Rockingham sat Northreach Base, one of the five great strongholds from her previous life.

And inside Northreach Base was an old acquaintance she hadn’t seen in a long time.

Robin wanted to pay Northreach Base a visit on this trip. She hoped that old friend was still stationed there this time around.

The zombie raid had wrung every last drop of energy out of the survivors. They barely held on until sunrise, and then the news hit that Robin and her group were leaving.

“Wait, you’re leaving? Right now?”

Someone couldn’t swallow the question. The night before, they’d watched this group fight with their own eyes. They all knew exactly what it meant to have people like this nearby. It was like carrying a living shield between them and death itself.

They hadn’t even had one full night of relief before the bottom fell out. Not a single person was ready to accept it.

They would be left to the whims of fate if Robin were to leave.

“Can’t you stay just a couple more days?” a voice rang out from the crowd. “Come one, finish what you started. Half our people are laid up with serious wounds and can barely move. Are you really going to leave us here like this?”

The moment the first voice rose, a dozen more followed.

They were vulnerable. They were hurt.

They were sure Robin couldn’t just stand there and watch them wait to die.

Henry’s brow creased the instant he heard it.

His patience had never been anyone’s idea of a virtue, and he didn’t pretend otherwise. “There it is again,” he said sharply. “The guilt trip. When are you people going to understand that even before the apocalypse, nobody owed you a single thing?

“Look around. Do you see what’s out there? Pulling you from the rubble was already more

Silence dropped over the crowd.

Then, after a long moment, someone muttered unwillingly: “But we’re all human: The apocalypse is already grinding everyone down. You know the saying, with great power comes great responsibility. You’re powerful. This is exactly the kind of moment when people are supposed to pull together and look out for each other.”

Robin’s lips curved. “Yes, looking out for each other.

“Then tell me,” she said, “we helped you yesterday. Where’s your side of that?

“If you really believe people should come together right now, then stand up on your own two feet. Waiting to be saved every time is the easy part. Saving yourself is what actually counts. Stop holding your hand out and waiting for someone to fill it.”

It was a hard thing to say out loud. But nobody had a word to fire back with.

Robin’s voice evened out. “If you want to survive, come with us. Don’t ask us to throw out our own plans and stay behind to guard you.

“Before yesterday, we were strangers who had nothing to do with each other. So what exactly gives you the right to make that kind of demand?”

She turned on her heel, stepped up into the armored vehicle, and was done talking.

Ella and the others fell right in behind her.

The crowd stared at one another, wide-eyed and speechless.

None of them had believed she actually meant it. But she did. They were genuinely leaving.

“Okay, but we still have people who are seriously hurt. Some of them can barely stand. What they need right now is rest. How are they supposed to keep up on the road?”

“Exactly. And look at them, not a scratch on any of them, and they’re still taking the armored vehicle. If they actually wanted to help us, shouldn’t they be the ones handing that over?”
