End Times, Surviving with My Beastly Army

Chapter 428 It’s Not Northreach

Bill jolted upright, his voice jumping with sudden excitement. Report this to the higher ups now! These people are probably here to join our base!

Northreach Base had always held itself to the standard of strength above all else, but anyone rolling through the apocalypse with two armored vehicles to their name wasn’t exactly smalltime.

And if they truly did join, those vehicles would be absorbed into the base’s assets on the spot

Winslow didn’t move right away.

This was how it always went.

Every errand, every bit of legwork, always fell on him.

Bill turned around and found him still standing there. His brow slammed down. Winslow Horowitz, I told you to report this! Are you deaf?

Winslow had no real choice. Alright, alright, I’m going right now.”

He was already halfway out when Bill’s voice chased him down the steps. What, are your feet nailed to the floor? Pick it up!

Winslow rolled his going, I’m going!

He delivered the report. The higherups took it seriously and dispatched two of their own to the base’s front entrance immediately.

The convoy was moving fast. By the time those two arrived, the armored vehicles were no more than about three hundred and thirty feet out.

Those are definitely armored vehicles, one of them breathed.

Both of them were practically vibrating. Fighters with assets like that joining the base would be invaluable,

stroke and two armored vehicles alone could reshape their operational strength in one stroke,

They were already deep into the daydream. Five total armored vehicles. Their base expanding another full tier. The possibilities stretched out wide and golden in their heads.

The deep, rolling growl of the engines swelled as the convoy drew near.

Then it swept straight past Northreach Base without dropping speed by a single mile per hour, carrying on down the open road until it shrank to nothing on the horizon.

The two officials stood rooted at the entrance, staring at each other.

After a very long silence, one of them said, in a voice stripped of all confidence. They weren’t coming here?

The other gave a stiff, pained nod. Apparently not.

They held that look for exactly one more beat, then turned in perfect unison and unloaded every bit of that humiliation directly onto Winslow. You absolute fool! You filed a report before you even verified a single thing! Were you deliberately wasting our time?

Winslow felt like the most wrongfully accused man alive.

Sirs, I wasn’t trying to mislead anyone,” he said, doing his best to keep his voice level. It was Bill who told me our base’s reputation must’ve reached them already, and that they were obviously coming to join us. I reported based on what he said. I had no idea their destination wasn’t us.

It was airtight, and they both knew it. That didn’t make them any less furious. One of them jabbed a finger at him. Don’t mistake us for a pair of doormen with nothing better to do. Our time isn’t cheap. Next time something like this comes up, verify it before you drag us all the way down here.”

Yes, absolutely. I’m deeply sorry for wasting your time. It won’t happen again,Winslow said, nodding rapidly.

The whole thing had been one enormous, humiliating disaster, and neither official could find anything more to pin on him. They stormed off in a collective huff.

Winslow watched their retreating backs and felt the weight of it all pressing down on his chest like a stone.

He’d been someone back home. A genuinely strong fighter, respected and looked up to by the people around him. He’d sought out Northreach Base on the strength of its legendary reputation, and earning his place here had taken real effort.

He’d imagined throwing himself into actual combat, carving out a new name for himself.

Instead, they handed him a post at the front gate.

There was a reason the old saying existed: better to be a big fish in a small pond than to vanish into the deep end of a big one. He’d only been here just over a month, and his dignity was already nearly ground to dust.

He dragged himself back up to the watchtower, and the moment he appeared, Bill launched straight into him. Why did those two armored vehicles just drive past?!

I genuinely don’t knowWinslow was hollowed out, body and soul, and the words slipped free before he could pull them back. I wasn’t the one driving them. I have no idea what was going through their heads.”

Are you talking back to me?

Bill’s eyes narrowed sharply. “If you hadn’t come running to me with halfbaked information in the first place, I never would’ve sent you upstairs to report it. When it comes down to it, this whole mess happened because you weren’t watching closely enough. This is entirely on you.”

Winslow said nothing for a long moment.

The one who’d announced those people were coming to join them was Bill himself.
