Chapter 429 Investigate

On the walk back, the two officials couldn’t stop the uneasy thoughts churning in their heads.
“Wilbur, where do you think those two armored vehicles were headed?” Randall Hillsmith said, his frown deepening. “With that many people traveling together, it’s got to be another base.”
Wilbur Hammerson shook his head. “No idea. But any base running armored vehicles through the apocalypse isn’t a small operation. We just don’t know which one it is.”
Randall let out a short, dismissive sound. “Whatever base it is, it still doesn’t hold a candle to ours. Though honestly, we don’t even know for certain they have a base backing them. If they’re operating independently, I’d much rather bring those people under our roof.”
“Fair point,” Wilbur said. “Their heading puts them straight through Heningford. I’ll send word over and have them keep a close eye out. If those people show up, I want Heningford to find out everything they can.”
Inside the armored vehicle, the corner of Robin’s mouth curved into the faintest smile.
Dane’s voice crackled through the radio. “Robin, why did we make a whole loop past that base? That wasn’t on our way to Heningford.”
Their original route hadn’t needed that detour at all.
“It was on purpose,” Robin said, her voice easy and unhurried. “We needed them to see us.”
She knew exactly what those armored vehicles meant to Northreach Base. They were the finest calling card she could possibly offer.
But she wasn’t walking through Northreach’s door. Not yet.
She wanted Northreach to notice them entirely on its own.
r Because what a person discovers for themselves is always far more irresistible than what gets delivered to their doorstep.
The armored vehicles pressed forward at full speed. Heningford Base and Northreach Base sat close enough that within twenty minutes, the sprawling outline of Heningford rose up along the horizon like a walled city out of legend.
“Good Lord,” Ella breathed, her breath catching hard in her throat. “Heningford is absolutely massive!
Even from a distance, its scale was written all over the landscape.
“Before the apocalypse, this whole area was an industrial district,” Pal said. “Factories everywhere. Once everything fell apart, Heningford’s leader took over the entire complex and just kept pulling survivors in. This is what it grew into.”
“Well, I learned something today,” Ella said.

Then she thought about it a little more. It was big, sure.
But Shangri–La had folded an entire zoo and all its surrounding land to its borders.
Heningford still had a ways to go.
Robin’s better, Ella thought, quietly pleased with herself.
Word of the armored vehicles had already reached Heningford Base by the time Robin’s convoy arrived, passed along from Northreach’s side of the road the moment they’d rolled past.
Heningford’s people tracked the movement on the road with sharp, hungry attention. Tire instant they spotted the armored vehicles, the excitement swept through them like a brushfire.
The excitement grew further when those vehicles turned and came bearing straight down in their direction.
The leader of Heningford Base went completely blank.
He turned to the man beside him. “So these people are actually coming here? For us?”
His lieutenant looked equally thrown. “It’s looking that way, sir. You don’t think they’re genuinely here to join us?”
Two armored vehicles.
What on earth do we have to offer that would make anyon
gate?
with assets like that walk right past Northreach’s front
The question barely had time to settle. The lead armored vehicle swung into a tight, controlled skid and rolled to a smooth, deliberate stop right in front of Heningford Base’s entrance.
Robin gave Dylan a look. Dylan stepped down from the vehicle, squared up to the gate that appeared completely unmanned, and called out in a clear, and commanding voice. “Is this Heningford Base?”
Heningford’s leader and his lieutenant exchanged a glance.
A figure appeared on the wall, looking down from above. “It is. Who are you people?”
“We want to join your base,” Dylan said.
So they really are joinin gus.
The lieutenant’s expression sharpened. “Our base welcomes survivors from every part of the country. Before anyone enters, though, every member of your group will need to pass through a mandatory screening. We screen for infection. It protects you just as much as it protects our residents.”
Dylan nodded. “That’s fine.”
A device that looked strikingly like a security scanner was lowered from the wall on a mechanical lift. “Please pass through one at a time. It detects infection only and won’t cause any harm to your body.“
