Chapter 445 The Elite Squads
Everywhere they went zombies fell.
Thud! Thud! Thud!

Geysers of black blood erupted like fountains, mixed with every color of brain matter imaginable. Severed zombie heads tumbled through the air, and a brief gap opened in the otherwise impenetrable swarm.
“Robin, that’s…”
Dane’s eyes went wide.
Robin smiled. “A base that takes in this many people wouldn’t survive without a few aces up its sleeve.”
The two squads that had just deployed were clearly Heningford Base’s elite. The moment they hit the ground, the difference was unmistakable.
“But I thought all the strong fighters had been recruited by Northreach. Why are these people still here?”
Henry frowned.
Pal’s eyes were dark. “That’s what they say, but Northreach’s bar is sky–high. Two possibilities: one, these people are Heningford Base’s hidden reserves, kept in reserve for emergencies exactly like this.
“Two, they’re strong, but still not strong enough to qualify for Northreach.”
Henry’s frown deepened.
To him, these fighters were already formidable.
Granted, nobody could compare to Robin–she was in a category of her own. The world had been a living hell for so long now, yet he had never encountered a single soul capable of matching that absolute freak of
nature.
But by his estimation, these elite squads were roughly on par with Dane and Klay. Still a step below Monica, though.
If even this wasn’t enough for Northreach, their standards were truly insane

“Kill!”
Below the wall, the Assault Squad’s captain was drenched head to toe in black blood swinging an enormous blade that gleamed with cold light in the dark–clearly no ordinary weapon. It cut without sticking, every stroke dean and lethal.
He led his 20–odd squad members in carving a bloody path through the swarm
The Decoy Squad was equally impressive, though their approach was entirely different Where the Assault Squad fought head–on, slaughtering everything in their path, the Decoy Squad wove through the horde like ghosts, using deliberately provocative tactics to draw the zombies attention

They’d harass them, bait them, and pull away–never committing to a full kill, just manipulating the
horde’s movements.
Before anyone realized the Decoy Squad had corralled a large cluster of zombies into a rough circle
“What are they doing?”
In response to Erin’s question, Robin said calmly. “Grouping them up for a mass kill.”
Sure enough, once the circle had taken shape, Langston spoke again from the wall, cool as ever. “Cleanup Squad, deploy.”
A third 30–person team leapt down from the walls in unison. Moving with blinding, lethal velocity, they hit the ground running and instantly encircled the writhing knot of zombies, trapping the monsters within heir own perimeter.
With the Decoy Squad keeping the zombies contained, the Assault and Cleanup Squads worked in perfect coordination, methodically slaughtering every zombie inside the formation.
Sniper Squad, take positions.”
At Langston’s command, dozens of sniper rifles appeared along the wall, zeroing in on the higher–level zombies scattered throughout the swarm. One shot, one headshot, every time.
Heningford Base really is something.”
Erin said with genuine admiration.
The arrival of the elite squads took some of the pressure off the front–line defenders.
But they were human, not zombies.
Being human meant they could be hurt, they could tire, and their bodies could give out.
The medical teams moved in with quiet efficiency, treating the wounded as fast as they fell.
As for anyone who’d been infected by the zombie virus, the other residents didn’t hesitate. Even if the nfected person was a friend, a family member, or a loved one, they were put down immediately
Otherwise, even more people would die.
The battle raged for over two hours. People fell. Others took their place. And still more died
But the zombie numbers were simply too vast.
