Chapter 444 The Battle for Heningford
The fate of the entire base now rested in his hands.
The fetid wind hit his back, and the young man’s heart hammered so violently he could hear it in his skull He could feel the zombie’s saliva dripping onto his skin.
He squeezed his eyes shut and, in the very last instant, slammed his fist into the warning bell with everything he had.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!
The alarm shrieked to life, piercing the night and echoing through every corner of Heningford Base within seconds.
Countless people jolted awake instantly.
‘The alarm! We’re under attack!”
‘Oh God–that’s the alarm!”
With his last breath, the young man screamed into the microphone mounted beside the bell. “All personnel, be advised! Massive zombie swarm incoming! All personnel, be advised!”
4 zombie swarm.
Residents flooded onto the wall. At the same moment, the swarm reached the base’s perimeter.
The trained guards launched their attacks immediately, but the flashes of elemental energy illuminated a scene that made everyone’s stomach drop.
Heningford Base had close to 10,000 residents. The zombie swarm bearing down on them numbered at least that many.
‘Robin.”
Ella’s expression was grim. “We’ve only been here two days.”
And already, a swarm of this magnitude had arrived. Their luck was unreal,
Robin murmured, “Right on schedule.”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
Robin said. “I et’s hold off for now and observe.”
“Got it.”
The swarm had hit without warning, but Heningford Base wasn’t defenseless

Chapter 444 The Battle for Hemingford
They operated under the umbrella of Northreach Base. Even though many of their top fighters had been poached by Northreach, the bar for entry was astronomical, which meant the people who’d stayed behind were still formidable in their own right.
Once the initial panic subsided and the full garrison mobilized, they managed to stabilize the situation and dispatch the zombie that had breached the wall.
That one had been a Level 3 with a jumping ability, which was how it had vaulted the wall ahead of the
swarm.
“Commander Calloway.”
Langston nodded grimly. “How many are we looking at?”
His subordinate’s face was ashen. “At least… 10,000.”
Langston inhaled deeply.
Ten thousand…
Heningford Base had nearly 10,000 residents, but not all of them were ability users.
The elderly, the young, and the infirm accounted for roughly 30 percent. And among the remaining 70 percent, ability levels varied wildly. Meanwhile, a rough estimate of the swarm showed that ordinary Level I zombies made up only about 30 percent. The bulk of the horde was Level 3.
Zombies were already slamming into the wall. The sounds of slaughter echoed nonstop. Langston spoke. his voice hard. “Relay my orders. Every ability user in the base is to report to the front lines immediately Non–combatants are to handle triage and evacuation/This is the fight of our lives. Whether Heningford Base survives depends on what happens tonight.”
His subordinate straightened. “Commander Calloway, you have our word. Every last resident will fight to the death for this base.”
The man’s form blurred, and he vanished into the crowd.
Heningford Base hadn’t survived this long by accident. They had cards to play.
Gunfire erupted along the wall–the first line of defense.
The night was black as pitch, the stars choked behind clouds. What had been a quiet sanctuary was now plunged into total chaos by the zombie siege.
The zombies surged forward like a nightmare given flesh, shrieking and clawing then dead white eyes flickering with an unearthly glow in the darkness.
The wall stopped their advance, but it didn’t deter them.
They could smell the fresh blood above, and all they wanted was to feed
