Chapter 194 Disappointing
And this place…
Ella shook her head.
Finished
Serena caught the brief flash of disgust on Ella’s face and shifted uncomfortably. “This is just the outermost layer of our base. The people here are survivors who were wandering outside. We just gave them somewhere to stay.”
The mplication was unmistakable. Having any roof at all was already more than enough.
Out there, zombies were everywhere.
Ella pressed her lips together and stayed quiet.
Lyle scoffed and dropped his voice low. “Our base has hundreds of people. There’s no way we can look after every single one of them. Your base has fewer people, so you’ve got more room. I don’t see what you’re so smug about.”
Mary-Jean shot him a sharp glare. “Why do you always have so much to say? Did you already forget what Captain Serena just told us?”
Ella’s gaze drifted toward the crowd, and something tightened in her chest. It got worse when she spotted a child gnawing on a scrap of bread he’d fished out of a putrid drainage ditch. Her brow furrowed hard. “Is that even safe to eat? He pulled that out of a filthy ditch. There’s disgusting black stuff all over it…”
That child was painfully small, starved down to skin and bone, and malnourished at a glance.
She couldn’t help but think of Oscar.
Little Oscar back at their base was plump, rosy-cheeked, and well-fed.
Robin took one look and turned away, her expression hollow. “I’d advise you not to waste a shred of sympathy on them. They won’t return it.”
Ella went still.

Dylan’s face was just as blank. “Human nature is rotten at its core,” he said, his voice flat. “The worse things get, the faster whatever conscience people had left just… vanishes.
“If you reach out to them now, they won’t thank you. They’ll just see you as someone to exploit. In a world like this, kindness only brings disaster down on your own head.”
Ella fell silent, her gaze drifting away in a daze. Martin watched the whole thing with a deeply furrowed brow.
If he hadn’t seen it himself, he wouldn’t have believed it.
This is Redwood Military Base?
The disorder, the chaos. It was nothing like what he’d imagined.

Chapter 194 fisappointing
Fluished
Serena felt a wave of discomfort the moment she caught their gazes.
“The situation right now is unusual,” she said quickly. “On top of that, a massive number of survivors pour in every single day. Space is extremely limited.
“But everything’s still in its early stages. Our base is actively being developed. Once things stabilize. conditions here will definitely get better.”
Nobody said a word. Martin and Drake had been frowning the entire walk, lost somewhere deep in their own thoughts. Ella stared at the wreckage around her, and her expression had gone flat.
Only Robin and Dylan looked completely unfazed, as if the squalor around them didn’t register at all.
Dylan simply felt nothing. Whether anyone around him lived well or suffered had nothing to do with him.
Robin had long since grown used to all of it. She’d gone completely numb.
After all, in her previous life, she’d clawed her way out of exactly this kind of world.
As for what Serena said, about the base still being in development and conditions improving later…
That was complete nonsense.
In her previous life, right up until the day she died, Redwood Military Base had looked exactly this wretched.
It got worse after Hector and his son seized control. Those two hoarded every scrap of authority and used it to bleed everyone beneath them dry.
The lives of Outerville’s residents had long since been discarded without a second thought.
During one zombie siege, that vicious father and son actually abandoned Outerville’s residents entirely, just to buy Central Command and Innerville some breathing room.
In Xane’s own words: everyone living on the outermost ring was nothing but a pack of lowlifes.
Using the deaths of those lowlifes to preserve their own lives was, to them, the highestñonor.
Serena didn’t quite understand what came over her. She’d seen scenes like this more times than she could count, yet today an inexplicable unease crept through her, as if every ugly secret was being laid bare in front of outsiders.
She couldn’t wait to leave, her steps quickening before she even realized it.
About ten minutes later, they reached another gate,
A row of guards stood watch there as well.
“Past this gate is Central Command,” Serena said.
