Chapter 206 The Keepers and the Messengers

It sounded like a compliment, but in this context, it carried a distinctly passive-aggressive edge.
The two enforcers exchanged a glance and managed a pained smile. “As long as you’re satisfied.”
“All right. Thank you both for the help today. The situation is resolved, so you don’t need to keep following me. I’ll have a look around on my own.”
And with that, Robin gave a casual wave and walked off.
The two enforcers stood there for a moment, uncertain whether to keep failing her.
Robin had just pinpointed their exact positions in a single breath which meant she’d known from the very start that she was being followed. She’d just never brought it up. The two of them had been quietly pleased with themselves this whole time, thinking their surveillance was airtight.
Now that she’d openly called it, following her any further was going to be awkward.
“What do we do? Keep going?”
One of them looked at his partner.
廣
The other set his jaw. “We follow her. What else? She already knows, sure, but so what? She hasn’t actually said anything, has she? If we stop now and our superiors come down on us, neither of us is taking the fall.”
Feeling the two tails reattach themselves behind her, the corner of Robin’s mouth curved slightly.
Interesting.
Still, she didn’t give the two of them another thought.
She walked the full length of Centerville at the fastest pace she could manage. When she tried to push ou into the Outerville, though, a guard stepped into her path.
“What’s this about?”
Robin looked at the guard in front of her. Her voice went cold.
“Ms. Neel. You’re an honored guest of this base, but we have rules. Residents of Centerville and the Outerville can’t move freely between the two zones. The Outerville is chaotic-fights break out constantly. If you got hurt out there by mistake, we would not be able to answer for it.”
The guard recited the line like he’d been drilled in it.
Robin took one look at him and knew he was an actual soldier. The posture, the bearing, the straightforward integrity in his face-the kind of face that practically screamed honest soldier
She gave a small laugh. “Captain Shaw said before she left that I was free to see any part of the base. Why has that changed the moment I get to your post?”
“My apologies, Ms. Neel. Rules are rules. Please head back.”

He wasn’t budging, and Robin didn’t press him. She just said, “All right, then.”
As she turned to go, something occurred to her. “Can I ask your name?”
The guard blinked, taken aback. “My-my name is Sean Grisham.”
“Got it.”
Robin nodded. “Sean. I’ll remember that.”
With that cryptic line behind her, she turned and walked off, leaving Sean scratching his head in complete confusion.
By the time she got back to the lodging, Ella and the others had dfifted in one by one.
They exchanged quick, knowing glances and went upstairs, all of them playing innocent.
Five minutes later, someone knocked on her door.
Dylan and the other two walked in.
Robin spoke first. “Well?”
Ella announced triumphantly, “I memorized every route I walked.”
Martin and Drake nodded. “Same here.”
Robin pulled paper and a pen out of her storage space and laid them flat on the table. Starting from their current location, she sketched out the routes she’d memorized first.
The others added their pieces
one after another, and a full map of Centerville came together fast.
“I noticed something. Centerville
Supposedly reserved for people who’ve made significant contributions to this base. In practice, though, if you hand enough bribes up the chain, you can get in that way too.”
Ella tapped a spot on the map. “There’s more to it. Even the people who live in Centerville are stratified.

Four sets of eyes dropped to the paper. The area she was pointing to was the strip of Centerville closest to the Outerville.
