Chapter 352 Teaming Up

Fached

Donald let out a low pleased laugh. By that point, Robin’s whole crew will already be ours. Our base’s strength will shoot through the roof. Jack saw firsthand what those people can do. We just tell them exactly how she died and point them straight at Vernon Base. Let them do the rest.

Not bad at all.

Rolf looked at him with something close to genuine surprise. I always knew you had a mean streak in you, but I didn’t think it ran this deep. Looks like I picked well. Really well.

The praise lit Donald up from the inside, and he didn’t bother hiding it.

The two of them exchanged a look, and the same selfsatisfied grip spread across both of their faces as they let themselves drift into a shared vision of everything that was coming.

This run had been brutal from start to finish. The rat swarms, the spider nest, the ruined grain, the people

who hadn’t made it back at all.

But at least no one was returning emptyhanded. The haul wasn’t what anyone had dreamed of, but it was real, and it was theirs.

They camped nearby for one more night and planned to head back at first light.

The deep of night settled over the camp, and with it came a stillness so complete it felt almost solid.

Each base had posted a single watchman, and a cluster of campfires burned in shades of deep orange and red, their crackling the only sound in the dark, punctuated now and then by the quiet, sharp pop of a branch giving way to the heat.

A figure slipped out of the Tyrant Base tents without making a sound.

He hugged the shadows with the practiced caution of someone who very much didn’t want to be seen, choosing every step with deliberate care to keep himself out of the firelight.

Then his foot came down wrong.

A dry branch snapped clean under his boot, the crack splitting through the silence like a blade.

Who’s there?

The watchman’s voice came fast and sharp. In the smothering quiet of the wasteland night, that sound carried everywhere, and the guard was on his feet instantly.

It’s me, just me!Donald stepped reluctantly out of the shadows, his expression the picture of harmless. inconvenience. I needed to use the restroom.

Oh, it’s you, man.

The watchman let out a long, shaky breath. “You nearly gave me a heart attack.”

This was the end of the world.

Out here, even the smallest unexpected sound was enough to inake every hair on your body stand at full

attention.

Yeah, sorry about that. Didn’t want to wake anyone up.”

Donald kept his voice casual and unhurried, filling the air with easy chatter. Your shift’s almost up anyway. Hang tight a little longer and you’re done.

Understood, thanks. Now go handle your business!

The watchman waved him off with what looked a lot like relief.

Donald gave him a companionable pat on the shoulder and turned to walk toward the tree line.

The moment the shadows swallowed him, he doubled back and made straight for the Vernon Base tents.

Vernon Base had pitched their camp at a deliberate remove from the others. Jack’s exact words had been that he had no interest in sleeping within breathing distance of these people.

Tonight, that distance worked entirely in Donald’s favor.

He closed the gap between himself and their camp without a sound.

Who goes there?

The Vernon Base watchman locked onto him with eyes full of hard suspicion. He was wearing what had once been a white lab coat. Whatever color it had started as was now a memory buried under layers of grime and worse.

Donald stepped into the firelight with both hands visible, one finger pressed to his lips to signal he wasn’t a threat. Hey, hey. I’m here to see Mr. Neel. I’m from

He hadn’t even finished the introduction before the watchman’s eyes narrowed in recognition. You’re with Tyrant Base.

Donald blinked, genuinely caught off guard. Youyou know who I am?

With so many people from so many bases packed into one stretch of wasteland, being recognized at all felt like something worth noting. Donald couldn’t help but feel a flicker of something warm at that.

Know you? Not exactly.

The man let out a derisive scoff. But Ms. Neel is absolutely impossible to miss. Stand next to someone like that and people are going to notice you whether you want them to or not.

Thanks to Robin, Vernon Base had spent half the day with their eyes glued to the Tyrant Base group. that much observation, a few faces were bound to stick.

So it’s Robin’s doing after all.
