Chapter 326 The Checkpoint

This method was one an old acquaintance told her back then, usable for emergency treatment of malaria.
But the success rate was not high.
It also depended on the patient’s will to live.
If there were better specific drugs, this type of malaria could be cured, but it just had to happen in a place that severely lacked medical supplies, so they could only leave it to fate.
After Tatiana finished doing what she could, she stepped aside, picked up Andy, and mixed formula to feed him.
Hubert stuck close to her side, taking small bites of bread.
She looked at Hubert’s face, which was even thinner than before. His chin had sharpened, and on his small, palm–sized face, only his eyes remained, exceptionally dark, round, and bright.
Hubert raised his head, their eyes met, and he revealed a bright smile. “Mommy, do you want to eat?” As he spoke, he handed over the bread in his hand.
Her heart warmed. She stroked his little head and said softly, “I’m not hungry, you eat more.”
Trina had left behind a good amount of money. For the past few days, they had relied on this money to avoid starving to death.
In the latter half of the night, the woman’s fever began to break. She broke out in a sweat, became much more lucid, and could recognize people.
Tatiana breathed a sigh of relief. Having survived the most difficult brush with death, the rest would be easier.
Norn was so happy he wept, kowtowing hard to her several times.
Tatiana avoided the kowtow and said directly, “You should fulfill your promise. Take me to the Hindersville consulate.”
She had asked around. The consulate was not in this area, but in another district.
To get there, one had to take the only highway. But that route had checkpoint after checkpoint and complex procedures. As an outsider, she would easily arouse suspicion and needed a local to lead the way.
Adults‘ minds were too complicated and difficult to guard against, so she had targeted Norn,

In this place, someone Norn’s age was already part of the family workforce, not considered a child.
“Okay, I promised you, and I’ll do it. Give me some time. I need to find the lady next door to help take care of my mom, and I also need to prepare some things. We’ll set off tonight.”
Hubert translated it, and only then did Tatiana nod.
Nearing their departure, she prepared extra food and also entrusted Norn to help buy some hard–to–get items, stuffing everything into a cloth bag, ready to leave after dark.
“We’ve searched the entire district, but found no sign of Ms. Tatiana.”
“All thirty–six factions have been brought under control. Any clues will be reported immediately.”
“The greatest possibility right now is that Ms. Tatiana has left this area.”
Jasper was silent, pressing the spot between his brows. Anyone could see his dark mood. The line of subordinates below him all had their heads down, not daring to breathe loudly.
“Block all roads. Screen them one by one.”
“Boss, doing this will easily stir up trouble and bring danger.”
A vicious glint flashed in those pitch–black eyes. “Do as I say.”
Stir up trouble?
If he still couldn’t find Tatiana, what did it matter if he had to dig three feet deep and tear this place apart?
At night, a series of newly added temporary checkpoints, like a wall, began to inspect passing vehicles.
On one dilapidated bus that was clearly about to be scrapped, Norn scratched his head, muttering, “I remember there not being a checkpoint here.”
Hubert provided a real–time translation. Tatiana’s heart leaped into her throat. “What does that
mean?”
“This is an extra checkpoint. It’s probably those bastards running out of money and wanting to rob people again.”

These checkpoints were unofficial, belonging to the jurisdiction of local factions. Every vehicle had to stop and be searched. Nominally, it was for security, but in reality, it was to collect tolls.
The driver wore a pained expression, cursing under his breath, clearly distressed about having to pay more money because of the extra checkpoint.
The vehicles were stopped one by one, waiting orderly for inspection. Not a single person dared to cause trouble.
Tatiana looked through the bus window at the approaching men. Each one held a long rifle. If anyone dared to make trouble, they would be shot immediately.
Tatiana retracted her gaze and adjusted the face covering on her face, while also placing the quietly sleeping little Andy into the cloth bag at her feet, disguising him as luggage.
Hubert was a little nervous. He leaned against his mommy and whispered, “Mommy, will we be discovered?”
“Shh, don’t be nervous.”
Soon, it was their bus’s turn.
Two sturdy men got on the bus and began to patrol, checking passengers one by one.
The driver had intended to slip them some money to get through quickly but was pushed back.
