In the split second before he pulled the trigger, Tatiana threw herself into a roll, the bullet whistling past her ear as she scrambled behind a thick marble pillar. Her lungs burned as she gasped for air, looking back to see the shooter growling in frustration at his missed mark.
She looked ahead. Under the protection of his bodyguards, Jasper was trying to retreat, with the woman following closely behind. But the situation took a turn for the worse when a grenade was tossed into the center of the room.
The blast was massive, flipping tables and chairs like toys. Those caught in the immediate radius were torn apart. Though Tatiana had ducked in time, the shockwave left her ears ringing with a dull, persistent roar.
Smoke grenades were tossed in next, and visibility plummeted as thick grey clouds filled the room. In the swirling haze and the screams of the wounded, Jasper fought to keep Hubert and Ann close, but the surging crowd began to pull them apart. His bodyguards were swept away in the tide of panicking people.
“Stay close to me!”
“Daddy! Daddy! Ann is gone!” Hubert shrieked, looking around to find his side empty.
“Ann!” Jasper’s face went pale. He spun around, desperately trying to locate his daughter through the smoke. The imposter was missing as well.
His heart bottomed out. “Ann!”
“Jasper! We’re over here!”
He whipped his head toward the voice and saw the imposter crouching behind a booth, clutching Ann. But that position was exposed–the nearest gunman was barely three meters away. Her loud cry had acted as a beacon. The attacker turned and leveled his rifle at them.
Bianca’s heart hammered against her ribs. She wanted to scream at the top of her lungs–the bastards said they wouldn’t hurt me! They’re actually shooting!
As the trigger was pulled, Bianca’s self–preservation instinct obliterated her acting skills. She instinctively ducked, pulling Ann in front of her like a human shield.
Ann stared down the barrel of the gun, her small body frozen in terror. Jasper’s pupils contracted as he lunged forward, a roar trapped in his throat. “Ann!”
But another figure was faster. A silhouette blurred through the smoke, throwing themselves forward and scooping Ann into a tight embrace. The bullet grazed the woman’s shoulder, a searing, white–hot line of pain.
She let out a muffled groan but ignored her own wound, immediately checking the child she had shielded. “Are you alright?”
