“What are you standing there for! Move! If we don’t leave now, we’re target practice!”
Hubert looked like he was about to burst into tears. “You scared the life out of me!”
“Don’t talk about dying–just move! Out the side door! Once the smoke clears, we’re trapped! Follow me, I know the way!”
When she had gone to the restroom earlier, she had made a mental note of the floor plan displayed on the wall. She knew exactly where the side exits were.
Tatiana took the lead with Ann in her arms, while Jasper followed closely behind carrying Hubert. They retreated through the chaos with practiced precision.
They managed to slip out through the side door without further incident.
Jasper’s security detail finally swarmed the alleyway, forming a protective perimeter. “Sir, it’s a terrorist attack!”
“Protect the children. The rest of you, with me.”
Without another word, Jasper turned to head back inside.
Tatiana grabbed his hand, her eyes wide. “Are you insane? You just got out–why are you going back in there?!”
He couldn’t explain that the imposter couldn’t be allowed to die just yet. He simply dropped a curt, “I’ll be back soon,” and disappeared into the building with his men.
Tatiana stood frozen, watching his silhouette vanish. Then, the realization hit her like a physical blow. He was going back to save his wife. The woman who had just taken a punch from her; the coward who had tried to use a child as a human shield.
A flare of white–hot rage rose in her chest, only to be instantly doused by a bucket of icy reality.
What right did she have to be angry?
That was his wife. What was wrong with a man saving his own wife?
She was the one out of line.
“Hey.”
A small hand reached out and tugged on two of her fingers.

Tatiana looked down into Ann’s bright, searching eyes.
“Thank you for saving me.”

A wave of warmth washed over Tatiana, the gloom in her heart dissipating at the sight of the girl’s beautiful smile.
“You’re welcome,” she replied, her voice sounding raspy even to her own ears.
“Why did you save me?”
“Because you’re precious. I couldn’t stand to see you get hurt.”
She couldn’t explain the logic behind it; in that moment, instinct had simply taken over. Looking back, it felt surreal. She had always considered herself someone who prioritized survival above all else, yet she had nearly thrown her life away for a child she barely knew.
Hubert shuffled over as well, wrapping his arms around her leg. “Thank you for saving Ann,” he said in a sweet, high–pitched voice.
Tatiana couldn’t help but chuckle. “You two are quite the pair. What are your names?”
“I’m Hubert Jackson.”
“I’m Ann Steele.”
Tatiana blinked. The two children looked so much alike–their eyes and features were practically carbon copies–so why didn’t they share a last name?
She was about to ask when she remembered the files she had seen earlier. Jasper’s wife was a Steele. The daughter had taken her mother’s name.
Her anger flared up again. That woman didn’t even care about her own daughter’s life! How could anyone be so selfish?
“And what’s
your—”
Before she could finish, Jasper emerged from the restaurant, carrying Bianca in his arms.
Bianca’s eyes were red from crying. She was huddled against his chest, sobbing piteously, one hand pressed firmly over her face to hide the damage from Tatiana’s punch.
“Jasper, it hurts so much.”
“It’s over now.”
Watching them, Tatiana felt as though a needle had been driven into her eyes. She looked away

This was the first time she had ever experienced such a bizarre, gut–wrenching feeling. Her nose even began to sting.
Fighting back the sudden surge of emotion, she said lowly, “Since you’re all safe, I’ll be going
now.”
Jasper’s heart tightened. He opened his mouth to stop her, but the imposter in his arms began to wail. “Jasper, is Ann okay? Is she hurt? I’m so sorry, I panicked, I didn’t know what to do… I’m so sorry…”
His expression was terrifyingly dark as he suppressed the urge to kill her right there.
“It’s fine. I know you were scared.”
Bianca finally relaxed, though she seethed with hatred for the woman who had struck her.
