Jasper studied her, the sense of displacement in his chest growing stronger. He asked a single, focused question: “Do you remember how old you are?”

She answered without a second of hesitation. “Seventeen.”

“What is your name?”

“Tatiana.”

“Where do you live?”

Tatiana shot him an annoyed look. “Jasper! I’m not stupid! I know where my house is. Why are you asking such bizarre questions? Do you think I’ve lost my mind?”

Alita and the others finally caught up, their faces pale with panic. “Get back here! Stay away from that man!”

Tatiana glanced back at the pirates and instinctively hid behind Jasper, clutching his sleeve. “They’re so strange,” she whispered, her voice trembling with genuine fear. “They keep calling me Sue or Tati and they won’t let me leave. I don’t know them at all. They don’t look like good people, Jasper.”

Jasper felt her reliance on him, a sensation he hadn’t felt in years. He looked down at her and a faint, triumphant smile played on his lips. He took her hand firmly. “Don’t be afraid. I’m taking you home. You’re right–they aren’t good people.”

Alita watched in horror as that bastard led their leader–away. They tried to move in, but they were no match for Jasper’s elite security detail. More importantly, Tatiana was following him of her own free will, her face full of trust.

Alita punched the wall in a fit of rage. “Damn it! What the hell is happening? She wakes throws herself into that guy’s arms?”

No one knew the answer. Except for Jasper, who had a budding theory.

Jasper moved her to a private residence under twenty–four–hour guard.

As they arrived, Tatiana began to notice the strangeness of her surroundings. She followed Jasper like a shadow, her voice small and uncertain. “Jasper, why am I here? What happened? I was just at school… and you really do look much older. Like, five or six years older.”

Jasper remained silent.

The seventeen–year–old Tatiana hadn’t yet been broken by tragedy. She was still the cherished pearl of her family, spirited and blunt.

“Jasper?”

He sighed softly. “Tatiana.”

“Yes?”

“You’ve been through an accident.”

She touched her bandaged shoulder and winced. “I figured that much out. I don’t know who the hell did this to me, but I’m going to make sure my father finds them.”

Jasper felt a massive headache coming on. Looking at her bright, untouched eyes, he had to decide how much to tell her. He opted for a curated truth.

A long silence followed his explanation.

Tatiana sat there, completely stunned. Her face turned a violent shade of crimson, and she began to stammer. “You… you mean… we’re actually married? And we have… two kids?!”

Jasper nodded solemnly.

“Agh!”

Tatiana let out a high–pitched scream, covered her face, and bolted for the bedroom. In one fluid motion, she slammed the door and locked it.

“Tatiana!”

“Stay out! I need to think! I need to process this!”

She threw herself onto the bed, burying her face in the pillow. Her heart was beating so fast she thought it might explode. She couldn’t believe it.

She had actually married Jasper! The man she had chased for three years, the one who had never given her the time of day!
