Hubert nodded vigorously.

The watch was a custom modification he had spent several nights perfecting. It was designed to maintain a signal anywhere in the world, was completely waterproof, and could charge via solar power. It featured GPS tracking, voice calling, and text messaging–essentially a miniature smartphone housed in a rugged, adult- style casing.
Ann pursed her lips and pressed a small object into Lucas’s palm. “Dr. Lucas, if you run into danger, just blow into this at them.”
It was a finely carved wooden whistle that looked like a simple toy.
Lucas turned it over in his hand, assuming it was a sweet parting gift, until she added: “There is a pressurized poison needle inside. Blow into the mouthpiece, and it fires. The needle is coated in a toxin I developed myself–death occurs within seven seconds. There is no antidote, Dr. Lucas, so please handle it with extreme care.”
Lucas’s smile froze. He suddenly felt a strong urge to toss the tiny gadget into the ocean; one accidental breath and his life would be over.
He couldn’t help but wonder if these two children were the living embodiments of the phrase “like father, like daughter.” They were absolute monsters in the making. On the surface, they were as pretty as dolls and perfectly behaved, yet they harbored such terrifying skills.
It finally made sense why the ship that delivered them contained not only food and medicine, but a complete set of chemical lab equipment and electrical tools. He had assumed it was for the island’s general use; he hadn’t realized they were the children’s personal playthings.
Tatiana, watching from the side, couldn’t suppress a laugh. “Don’t take it to heart, Dr. Lucas.”
He sighed and tucked the gifts away. “Thank you both. I really must be going now.”
“Wait,” Hanson called out suddenly. “Someone else is coming.”
Lucas looked confused. “Who?”
“Me!” a loud, energetic voice rang out.
Alita came rushing through the crowd, panting with relief. “I made it just in time!”
“What are you doing here?” Lucas asked.
“Why shouldn’t I be here? Dr. Lucas, I’m going with you. I don’t trust you out there on your own. If you run into trouble, I’m the one who’s going to keep you safe.” She realized how intimate that sounded and quickly added, “It’s for Tatiana’s sake. You have to be alive to bring that other doctor back.”
Lucas frowned and shook his head. “That isn’t necessary. I can move faster alone. A second person will only slow me down.”
Hanson let out a cold snort. “Slow you down? Alita is highly skilled and can protect you. Besides, we have the funds; she won’t be a burden.”

The truth was that Hanson still didn’t fully trust Lucas. Regardless of how many people the man had cured, Hanson suspected he might try to disappear once he hit the mainland. Sending Alita was his insurance policy.
“Exactly, Dr. Lucas! Don’t worry, I won’t be a drag on you!” Alita flashed a bright smile, her white teeth contrasting sharply with her sun–darkened skin. She was a striking beauty in her own rugged way.
Tatiana considered it for a moment and nodded. “It’s a good idea for Alita to go. You’ll have company.”
Tatiana understood Alita’s feelings, and she knew that trying to talk the girl out of it was useless. It was better to let her go and find out for herself if the match was right. Some people only reveal their true nature after spending time together in the real world.
With the decision finalized, Lucas had no choice but to take Alita with him.
As the ship hoisted its sails and began to pull away, Tatiana stood at the harbor, waving goodbye. Ann and Hubert shouted at the top of their lungs: “Goodbye, Dr. Lucas! Goodbye, Sister Alita!”
Tatiana suppressed a cough until they were out of sight. Back in the privacy of her room, she finally let out a violent, racking series of coughs.
She opened her drawer and pulled out the painkillers Lucas had left behind. She shook out two pills and swallowed them with a gulp of water. There were only two bottles, meant to last three months–the exact time Lucas promised it would take to return.
Whether it was the medicine or sheer willpower, the throbbing in her head began to subside.
She looked into the mirror. In just a few months, she had become a ghost of her former self, a mere shell of a person. She let out a self–deprecating laugh, remembering how proud and defiant she had felt when she said goodbye to Jasper at the harbor. It felt like a lifetime ago.
She turned the mirror face–down, unable to look any longer. She would stay alive, even if every second was an agonizing struggle.
On the ship.
To save time, the vessel was pushed to its limits. They made no stops for supplies, and with their ample fuel reserves, they expected to reach the mainland in about ten days.
The journey, however, was miserable. Or rather, it was miserable for one of them.
