Chapter 391 The Wild Pursuit
Lucas had no strength left to fight. He slumped against the railing, looking more dead than alive.
“How much longer?”
“Eight days.”
His eyes grew even darker. “I will endure it.”

There was no other choice. The sailors on this ship were all men from Steele Island; every one of them was desperate to reach the mainland, kidnap the specialist, and get back to save Tatiana. They weren’t about to slow down for the sake of his comfort.
For those eight days, Lucas clung to consciousness by a thread.
The moment he stepped onto solid ground, his legs turned to jelly. He stumbled and would have hit the pavement if Tammy hadn’t caught him.
“You’re a bit fragile, aren’t you?” she noted, her tone blunt. “Move over, I’ll just carry you on my back.”
She moved to hoist him up by force.
“No!” Lucas shoved her away, his rejection sharp and cold.
Tammy staggered back, nearly losing her footing. She looked at him with a flash of irritation. “Hey! What is your problem?”
“I said no. Did you not hear me?”
Weakened by days of seasickness, Lucas’s usual composure had evaporated. He was a far cry from the gentle, polished doctor everyone knew on the island.
Tammy wasn’t used to this side of him, but she chose not to argue. Lucas took several long minutes to gather himself before finally straightening up. “Find a hotel nearby and stay put. Wait for me to get back. It won’t take long.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“Are you deaf? Stay here. You’ll only be a liability out there. You don’t even have an ID…”
“I do!” Tammy snapped, reaching into her pocket and thrusting a document toward him.
Lucas thought she was joking. “Stolen ones don’t count.”
“It’s not stolen! It’s real!”
He took it with a skeptical look. How could an islander with no nationality have a legal identity? But as he opened the document, he froze.
Name: Tammy Steele.
The date of birth and ID number were all there, perfectly formatted. Tammy lifted her chin defiantly.

“Hubert got this for me. It’s the real deal!”

Lucas stared at the paper. A foreign child couldn’t pull this off–this was the work of Hubert’s father, Jasper.
He handed the ID back to her. “Did Hubert give you the name, too?”
“No! I asked Hubert how to write my name in the local language. He spent a long time teaching me; I was a very serious student! I wanted to be closer to Tati, so I took her surname!”
She put her hands on her hips, looking quite proud of herself. “So, my name is Tammy! Is it pretty?”
Lucas couldn’t help himself. He muttered a single, blunt word under his breath: “Moron.”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing. I’m leaving. Do not follow me.”
With that, Lucas turned and walked away. On this trip, he didn’t just have to find a psychologist; he also had to return home to settle some personal affairs. The last thing he wanted was a wild “primitive” woman shadowing his every move.
Tammy didn’t listen. She set off after him, keeping a steady distance of a few meters. Lucas caught a glimpse of her in his peripheral vision, and his irritation spiked.
He knew exactly what she was thinking. To him, she was just an uneducated, wild woman from a remote jungle. On the island, she held influence, so he had never openly rejected her. But now that they were back in modern society, he wanted nothing to do with her.
He stepped to the curb and hailed a taxi. As the car pulled up, he climbed in and slammed the door. “Bond Complex,” he told the driver.
Through the rearview mirror, he saw her start to run. She was sprinting with everything she had, trying to keep up with the car. But how could two legs beat four wheels? Within seconds, she was a tiny speck in the distance.
He allowed a small, mocking smile to touch his lips. “Stupid girl.”
The car soon reached the city center, where the traffic began to thicken. It was peak rush hour, and the roads were a sea of vehicles. The taxi slowed to a crawl, stopping and starting every few seconds.
Frustrated, Lucas checked his watch and rolled down the window, staring at the long line of cars ahead. Suddenly, a series of gasps erupted from the sidewalk.
“Holy crap! Is that a pro sprinter?”
“Is there a marathon going on today?”
“Look at her go! She’s incredible!”
A sudden, sinking feeling settled in Lucas’s gut. He turned his head to look back, and his pupils constricted.
A familiar figure was weaving through the traffic. At first she was small, but she grew larger by the second, closing the gap with terrifying speed.
