Holton’s expression showed little warmth; his tone remained indifferent. “It’s good that you’re back. Just be more obedient this time. Don’t go coveting things that aren’t yours. Focus on being a doctor. That way, if anyone in the family gets a headache or a fever, you can look after them–at least then my money won’t have been wasted on your medical school tuition.”
There were countless rumors regarding why Lucas had been kicked out two years ago.
Only Lucas knew the truth: that day, simply because he had suggested interning at the family company, his biological father had beaten him with a cane and banished him from the house.
Thinking of that day, Lucas forced a wide smile. “I understand, Father.”
Holton was satisfied with his “the wise man submits to fate” attitude. “Let’s eat.”
Everyone took their seats.
Mrs. Lund, from the Leroy family, offered a few hypocritical words of concern. “Have you been well these past two years? Really, why bother fighting with your father? You should have just admitted you were wrong and come home sooner. There’s no grudge between a father and son that lasts forever.”
Hearing those fake words made him want to retch. Unfortunately, now was not the time to drop the mask. He lowered his head. “Yes, I know.”
Beside him, Mandy arched an eyebrow and asked, “Where did you go? How did you end up looking so haggard? You’ve gotten a lot darker, and your skin looks terrible.”
Her words were dripping with mockery. Mandy was certain her “dear elder brother” had suffered abroad and had come crawling back home with his tail between his legs. The brother who used to be as aloof as a flower on a high peak had finally fallen into the dirt.
Lucas narrowed his eyes and said vaguely, “The sun.”
The UV rays on Steele Island were no joke; even he had tanned significantly. Only Tatiana was like some kind of supernatural being–no matter how much sun she got, she never turned dark.
“Sounds like you didn’t do so well out there.”
He paused but didn’t deny it. To be honest, he hadn’t been Jasper’s first choice. Jasper found the drama in the Lund family a nuisance. Initially, Jasper had shortlisted five doctors, and Lucas was one of them. In the end, Lucas was the one who won the position.
His medical skills weren’t the most legendary among the five, but he was the most resilient. He could handle the harsh environment of the island and guarantee a steady hand that never faltered. He had sacrificed a lot to earn that spot.
But it had all been worth it.
John wore a smug grin, his delight growing with every sign of Lucas’s misfortune. What did being the eldest son matter? He still had to kiss John’s boots.
During the meal, Mandy told several amusing stories to please her father and shared some high–society

“Dad, I heard that the head of the Jackson family from Dalliston is returning to the country soon. Apparently, he’s coming by sea. I wonder if he’ll pass through our docks. If he does, I’d love to see that legendary figure with my own eyes.”
Holton glanced at her. “Stupid girl. The Jackson family owns the largest ports in the world. Why would they bother passing through mine?”
Mandy stuck her tongue out. “I was just guessing. It would be amazing if he did. I wonder what the legendary Jasper looks like! Right, brother?”
She threw the topic to Lucas. He paused, recalled a specific face, and said, “He has an overwhelming presence. Just being near him makes you afraid to meet his eyes. He is not a man to be trifled with. However… at certain times, he can be quite reasonable.”
For instance, whenever Lucas reported on Tatiana’s condition, that same Jasper became unprecedentedly gentle.
Mandy burst out laughing. “Hahaha! You talk as if you’ve actually met Jasper Jackson! How could that be possible?”
He remained silent.
Even John joined in the mockery. “Someone of Mr. Jackson’s status is not someone we can just approach. Don’t make wild guesses.”
Even Holton added a warning: “Watch your mouth. Don’t go making trouble for me.”
The subject was dropped. After dinner, Mandy intimately held her father’s arm, chatting and brewing tea like the perfect “precious daughter.” John followed closely, discussing company matters with his father.
Only Lucas was left behind like a ghost, looking out of place

John suddenly spoke up. “Oh, sorry about that. I cleared out your room to house Bolt. I figured since you were never coming home, there was no point in letting it sit empty. I’ll have a maid find somewhere else for you.”
