After all, she was simply giving away too much! Her generosity was staggering, and everyone wanted a piece of the action.

“My son said there are two children living there, Ann and Hubert. They aren’t very old, but they’re incredibly sharp.”

“So, is it possible… she’s just looking for playmates for her kids?”

“Like royal study partners?”

They exchanged looks of realization.

In a way, they had hit the nail on the head. Tatiana was indeed serious about finding companions for Ann and Hubert. Naturally, she had no interest in children with poor character.

To filter them out, she had set up a three–tiered series of tests. Only those who passed the evaluation would receive a permanent pass. The children who remained at the end were the ones she truly wanted.

Lindsey admired the strategy but still had her reservations. “Aren’t those gifts a bit much? You might attract the wrong kind of attention–thieves and the like.”

Tatiana shook her head. “Grandma, to establish a foothold here, hiding is useless. The moment I bought this estate, I was thrust into the spotlight. Since I can’t avoid it, I might as well display enough power to make people think twice before crossing us.”

She had suffered far too much in the first half of her life; she had no intention of suffering in the second. Besides, with her agonizing headaches, she didn’t have the energy to deal with petty schemes. A bold, unconventional approach was more efficient.

Of course, security at the estate needed to be tightened. Fortunately, Hanson had recently recruited another pirate crew and was looking for a way to station them.

Amidst the busyness, her condition improved slightly.

Tammy, however, seemed distracted and gloomy, often staring blankly at the sky.

“What are you looking at?”

Hubert craned his neck, looking up at Tammy who was perched in a tree.

Tammy’s checks flushed crimson. She vaulted down from the tree and clamped her hand over Hubert’s mouth. “Shh! Don’t shout! Someone will hear you!”

Hubert blinked innocently.

She released him and gave a sharp “Shh!” again. “Keep it down.”

“If you miss Dr. Lucas, why don’t you go find him?”

Tammy’s face instantly crumpled. She picked up a twig and began doodling aimlessly in the dirt. “He doesn’t want to see me. He won’t even reply to my messages.”

Hubert squatted down beside her, looking like a little ball of fluff. “Do you want to know what Dr. Lucas is doing right now?”

Tammy froze. “I do! But I can’t see him.”

“I have a way!”

Hubert went off and sneakily returned with his laptop. After a few quick taps, the computer began to emit sound.

Rustle, rustle.

It sounded like the friction of fabric.

Tammy’s eyes widened. “Is this…”

“His watch! I can connect to it. I quietly turned on the audio receiver, so we can hear what’s happening on Dr. Lucas’s end. But you absolutely cannot tell Mommy! She’d scold me so hard it would be a disaster!”

While his mother was wonderful and rarely lost her temper, she was terrifying when she actually got angry. Hubert was very careful not to cross that line.

“Mommy told me I’m not allowed to invade people’s privacy, so I don’t usually do this. I’m just letting you listen this once.”

Tammy leaned in toward the laptop, straining to hear.

It sounded like someone was speaking. But the voice was cloying, affected, and dripping with flirtation.

Good question.

Tammy silently backed away a bit. “Hubert, translate it for me.”

Hubert stifled a giggle but helped anyway.

“Please, be gentle with me…”

“Ouch, you’re being so rough. Don’t be in such a hurry; we have all the time in the world.”

Lucas’s voice was absent; there was only the woman speaking, accompanied by heavy, labored breathing.

Hubert stopped translating. He didn’t even know how to put the rest into words.

Snap! Tammy slammed the laptop shut. “I’m not listening anymore!” she snapped irritably.

“Tammy?”

“And you’re not allowed to listen anymore either, Hubert!”
