Chapter 466 New Identities
When she opened her eyes, she realized he was already back.
Two identification cards sat on the table. One for a man, one for a woman.
The man’s name was Bovine. The woman’s was Flowie.
“You’re awake? Are you hungry? I brought you some food.”

Norman walked over, checked the bandage on her head, and brought over the warm food he had purchased.
“What are these?” she asked, gesturing toward the cards.
“Our IDs. From now on, your name is Flowie.”
“How did you get them?”
“Bought them on the black market. They’ll do for now.”
She scanned the small, cramped room and noticed it was now filled with supplies–new clothes, shoes, toiletries, and other daily necessities.
She looked at him with a trace of suspicion. “Did you rob someone?”
Norman paused, then flicked her forehead lightly. “What goes on in that head of yours? It’s honest money. I went down to the docks and helped unload cargo. Got paid in cash at the end of the shift.”
Only then did she notice that his clothes were covered in grime and dust. A wave of guilt washed over Tammy; she had misjudged him. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “That must have been hard work.”
Norman waved it off as if it were nothing. “Don’t say stupid things. I’m your man. If I can’t handle a little hard labor, I don’t deserve to be alive. Just rest up. I’ll earn more money as quickly as I can so we can move out of this dump.”
Hearing him say I’m your man felt incredibly strange to her. She didn’t remember anything of their past, so to her, he was a complete stranger. Yet, her physical instincts told her that this person was trustworthy. Torn between logic and intuition, she tentatively accepted the premise of their relationship.
“Let’s eat first,” she said. “You need your strength.”
She nodded and began to eat heartily. As her strength returned, her senses sharpened, and she

immediately noticed the lingering odor on her skin. Between the river water and the frantic events of the day, she hadn’t had a chance to change or wash. She felt filthy, and she marveled that Norman could sit there with a straight face.
“Want to shower?”
“Yes. But there isn’t a bathroom in here.”
“The bathroom is communal, at the end of the hallway. Take your clothes; I’ll walk

there.”
Cheap motels like this only offered shared facilities. Norman’s pride flared up again; it felt beneath him to have his woman staying in such a grimy place. He needed to get them out, and fast.
He had spent the day scouting and saw plenty of opportunities to make quick money–most of them illegal. But the thought of a woman waiting for him back at the room made him hesitate. In an unprecedented move, he had actually chosen the path of a law–abiding citizen and worked a manual labor job.
If Jasper knew, he would have laughed himself hoarse. The eldest son of the Cole family—a man whose entire lineage was practically etched into the criminal code–was suddenly a model citizen.
Unfortunately, no one knew. Tatiana and Jasper were searching frantically, but they couldn’t find a single trace of where the two had ended up. The only silver lining was that no unidentified bodies had turned up at the morgues.
Tatiana rubbed her temples in frustration. “If they’re alive, why can’t we find them? Could they have been kidnapped?”
Jasper shook his head. “There isn’t a force in Bellwood powerful enough to move against them without me hearing about it.”
In fact, since he had decided to root himself in Bellwood, he had become the city’s undisputed shadow king. Nothing should have been able to escape his notice. Yet, these two had vanished into thin air.
Tatiana sighed. “It doesn’t make sense. If they were awake, they would have contacted us. Even if they were injured, it’s not like they’d both suddenly forget the way home.”
She didn’t realize she had just hit upon the exact truth. But since it seemed too absurd to be real, they simply continued their search.
Back at the motel, Norman led Tammy to the bathroom. The communal facilities were abysmal; the showerheads were rusted, the water pressure was pathetic, and the door was a rotting piece of wood with holes patched over with scraps of waterproof tarp.

Tammy didn’t complain. She wasn’t someone who couldn’t handle a bit of hardship.
“Go ahead. I’ll wait out here for you.”
