“Trying it on doesn’t cost a cent!” The saleswoman, sensing a sale, shoved Tammy toward the fitting room without taking no for an answer. “A girl with skin as fair as yours looks best in black. And look at those collarbones, that waistline–it’s a sin not to wear a dress!”

Norman watched her get half–forced into the stall, a faint smile playing on his lips. He leaned against the wall outside, waiting, his fingers idly tapping against the surface. His mind drifted, wandering through thoughts he couldn’t quite name.

Ten minutes passed, and the door remained shut.

“Flowie?” Norman called out softly. “If it doesn’t fit, forget it. We can—”

The door cracked open just an inch. A hand shot out and, before he could react, yanked him closer. The force was so sudden it nearly knocked him off balance.

“What’s wrong?”

Tammy’s voice came out muffled from inside. “The zipper…”

Norman froze for a second, then cleared his throat. “Do you need help?”

Snapping out of his daze, Norman reached out and pinched the metal pull of the zipper. His fingertips accidentally brushed against her back–the contact was warm and incredibly soft. He held his breath, carefully guiding the zipper up to the top.

Once that thought surfaced, he couldn’t ignore it. He averted his gaze, pulling his emotions back under control.

The saleswoman appeared out of nowhere, clapping her hands in delight. “I told you! This dress was practically made for her! Look at that poise–even the celebrities upstairs spending tens of thousands can’t compete with this!”

“Five hundred is a steal!” the woman continued to ramble. “This is a high–quality silk blend. If it weren’t last season’s stock, there’s no way it would be this price…”

Norman pulled out five hundred dollars. “We’ll take it.”

The woman processed the payment with lightning speed. Tammy intended to change back into her old clothes, but Norman stopped her.

“Keep it on.”

“Then you should change too!”

The quick–witted saleswoman immediately produced a set of men’s clothing: a casual, dark- toned button–down and tailored trousers. It complemented her little black dress perfectly, like a matching couple’s set.

“Exactly! A young couple dressing up together–how wonderful! You two look so well- matched!”

Norman hadn’t intended to buy anything for himself, but that phrase struck a chord.
