He smiled, dipping a piece of pork, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside into the sauce and placing it on a lettuce leaf in front of her.

Tammy’s eyes crinkled into crescents. “Thanks, hubby!”

She expertly wrapped the meat and took a huge bite. Closing her eyes in satisfaction, she didn’t hold back the praise. “So good! How are you so good at grilling?”

Norman smiled and slid some mushrooms to the edge of the plate. “I remembered you liked these. I’ll grill

a bunch.

From Tatiana’s perspective, they looked like a genuinely happy couple. It was exactly what Norman hasi daimed.

Her feelings were complicated.

Hubert and Ann noticed too. They leaned in and whispered, “They look really happy.”

Tatiana hadn’t kept the kids in the dark once she found Tammy. They had been just as worried as she was But seeing this, she felt a bit better.

Maybe she could actually focus on this Westland trip now.

The lighting in the shop was warm, and the chatter from the other tables acted like comfortable white noise.

Norman’s phone buzzed in his pocket for the third time. He ignored it and kept his eyes on the meat.

But Tammy had noticed his pocket lighting up.

His fingers tapped the table twice, an unconscious sign of irritation.

Norman’s hand faltered with the tongs. What’s with the sudden shift? “Where were you yesterday afternoon?” Tammy looked him right in the eye. Her voice was unsettlingly calm.

A chill ran down Norman’s spine. He tried to stay steady as he flipped another piece of meat. “I told you. I had a match.”

‘Bovine,” Tammy cut him off, her voice dropping an octave. “I went there. Your number never showed up on the big screen.”

The noisy background of the restaurant seemed to fade away.

Just as Norman was scrambling for an explanation, Tammy spoke again. “Did he come to find you?”

‘He?”

‘That mean, nasty prick.”

Norman caught on instantly. He kept his face neutral. “How did you know?”

The stories match up.

Tammy’s expression turned fierce. “That absolute bastard! He promised he wouldn’t come looking for you!”

Norman stayed silent,

“Bovine, don’t be scared. Tell me, what did he say to you?”

In those few seconds, Norman had already spun a lie.

“He told me not to even think about the family inheritance.”

Tammy nearly snapped her fork. She was fuming. “I knew that prick wouldn’t keep his word! God, I’m going to kill him one of these days!”

“You met him too?”

“Yes!”

She didn’t hold back anymore. She told him everything about the gala and spent the next few minutes cursing Norman’s name.
