The only sound in the car was the tires crushing gravel. Tatiana watched the acacia trees pass the windo before finally speaking up. “We should do this more often. Just to clear our heads.”
Jasper’s lips curved into a smile. “As long as you want to, I’ll be right here with you.”
Night fell and the camp’s bonfire crackled. Since the migration tour lasted two days, they spent the nigh in a pre–established camp.
Hubert and Ann were wrapped in the same blanket, listening to the guide tell legends about the stars. Before long, their heads were leaning against each other, fast asleep.
“I’ll carry them back to the tent,” Tatiana said, starting to get up.
“I’ve got it.”
Jasper scooped up both children. His movements were steady and practiced. Tatiana watched his back. feeling a warmth she hadn’t felt in a long time.
By the time she finished washing up and returned, Jasper was sitting alone by the fire, looking at the sky She hesitated before sitting down beside him.
“Are the kids out?”
“Yeah. Hubert started talking in his sleep, but I patted him back to quiet.”
Jasper handed her a cup of hot tea. “He’s been like that since he was a baby. He always talks in his sleep after he gets too excited.”
That detail gave Tatiana pause. She remembered he was the one who raised Hubert when he was small. I had been a hands–on father.
She sipped her tea and looked up. The Milky Way stretched across the sky, much brighter than anything in the city. The distant cries of hyenas mixed with the chirping of crickets.
“Today…” Tatiana traced the rim of her cup. “What you said to them was moving”
Jasper watched the sparks from the fire. “I just want them to understand that while life is cruel, it’s also worth it. He paused. “Just like us. Even if there’s been pain between us, we shouldn’t miss the chance to

He saw her wavering. He noticed everything. If she was too hesitant to take that step forward, he would. H would walk toward her without looking back.
Tatiana’s heart skipped a beat. In the glow of the fire, the light softened Jasper’s face.
She raised her teacup. “A toast to your sweet talk!
Jasper didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but he raised his cup anyway. “Sure thing”

Both of them rushed toward the children’s tent. Hubert had been jolted awake by the thunder and crying. Ann was sitting up, rubbing her eyes.
Jasper pulled both kids into his arms. “Don’t be scared. You’re fine.”
Tatiana quickly wrapped them in blankets. The rain caused the temperature to drop fast. Their ter sturdy, and with the guards and guide outside, they were safe.
The lightning and thunder were just loud. Each boom sounded like it was right next to them. Ligh illuminated the four of them huddled together. Ann burrowed into her mother’s arms while Hube gripped his father’s collar.
Tatiana glanced at Jasper, signaling for him to say something..
He caught the command. “Remember the wildebeests we saw?”
‘Yeah!”
His voice remained steady despite the storm. “They keep moving even through the wind and rain because…”
‘Because there’s greener grass ahead!” Hubert chirped, his grip loosening.
‘Exactly. They’re heading for better ground.”
His deep voice filled the tent as he told a story about the migration. He had clearly done his homewor The kids were entranced, eventually forgetting about the thunder. Even Tatiana found herself listenin
He actually looks pretty handsome right now.
I’m not telling him that, though.
As the rain slowed down, the children fell back asleep. Jasper tucked them in and turned to find Tatiana staring at him.
He suddenly leaned in and pressed a kiss to the corner of her mouth. It was light and quick. By the time she reacted, he had already pulled back.
