“The regional head for Westland. A man named Boris.”

Tatiana didn’t know him. That meant it wasn’t personal; he was just targeting the owner of the mine.

“I don’t know much about him,” Xavier admitted. “But I have ways to find out. Give me some time.”

“No need. The name is enough. I can handle the rest.”

With a target in mind, the investigation would be easy.

Xavier insisted. “I want to help, even if it’s just a little bit.”

Xavier realized he’d messed up. “Sorry. Forget I asked.”

Tammy walked a few steps away and sat on the grass, hugging her knees.

Xavier hesitated but went over and sat next to her. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.”

Xavier started digging through the grass next to him.

Tammy was thinking about Taven and felt like venting. “Hey, listen…”

She stopped when he held out a dragonfly made of grass. It was detailed and looked alive.

“An apology gift,” Xavier said, putting it in her hand. “Hope you don’t hate it.”

He had given everything he had to the kids, so he had nothing left to give her. This was all he could

manage.

Tammy loved it. She messed with the dragonfly and her anger vanished.

She called him by his name just like Tatiana did. It sounded natural coming from her.
