A young boy about five years old stood there. He was a chubby kid in a white robe with rosy cheeks from the sun. He looked very friendly.

Ann clearly knew him. She let go of her mother’s hand and ran over.

The boy gave a shy, goofy smile.

Hubert followed her. “Harimo, where are your parents?”

“They’re over there.”

Harimo pointed to a couple selling grilled sausages. Parent Teacher Day was full of food stalls where parents could make a little extra money.

Harimo was being honest. It was a nice compliment.

Tatiana watched the kids together. “Is he their friend?”

Ann stopped smiling. Hubert narrowed his eyes.

Harimo stepped in front of them. “Hassan! Leave them alone! Stop bothering my friends!”

Hassan shoved Harimo aside and got right in Hubert’s face. He used some nasty words. “Go back where you came from. You don’t belong here. You’re just low class outsiders.”

The insult hit hard. Their parents had told them to be patient, but the blatant disrespect was too much.
