Chapter 583 The Bait

That was all he had left.

Until things cleared up, the Jackson family assets were frozen solid. Gordon had a secret account with a few tens of millions in it, but that was nothing. It wouldn’t even cover the house they were standing in. Tatiana smiled. “Grandpa, don’t worry about it. I have money. Plenty of it. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Jasper hadn’t told him much, so Gordon had no clue what Tatiana had been up to or just how much wealth she was sitting on.

“Are you serious?”

Tatiana didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Yes, I’m serious.”

Hubert jumped in to help. “Mommy has mines! Lots and lots of mines!”

Gordon still wasn’t buying it. “Hubert, don’t tease me. Where would she get a mine? Soren never touched that business.”

He knew Tatiana was Soren’s granddaughter and had inherited her estate, but even that kind of money shouldn’t be thrown around like this. These two houses alone cost over five hundred million. Even a massive fortune would disappear at that rate.

But for Tatiana, the whole point of reaching the top was being able to protect the people she cared about. Otherwise, the money was useless. To get Gordon to relax, she leaned in and whispered the truth about Mine Number 9.

Gordon just sat there, his mouth hanging open, completely speechless. Tatiana gave him a firm nod. “So, Grandpa, leave it to me. Just focus on resting.”

Gordon’s eyes blurred with tears. “Tatiana, you’re a good woman. The Jackson family is just a weight around your neck now.”

He felt like they didn’t even deserve her anymore.

“Grandpa, stop that. You’re their great grandfather. I’m not leaving you behind.”

Once Gordon was settled, Tatiana felt okay leaving Hubert and Ann at the house. Their faces had been outed, so going outside was too dangerous. Luckily, the twins were being helpful and were more than happy to keep their great grandfather company so their mother could work.

Seeing them all getting along gave Tatiana the opening she needed to head out. She wanted to see Jasper, but since he was dodging her to keep her safe, she couldn’t just knock on his door. She had to take the long way around.

“Did you get an invite too?”

“The charity gala in three days? Yeah.

“Who’s actually behind this? It’s a weird time to throw a party.”

“It’s huge. Half the city is invited.”

“Probably some new money coming back from overseas.”

“We’ll find out when we get there.”

Everyone who got an invitation showed up. The invites themselves were insane. They were wrapped in tier velvet and silk, feeling soft and expensive. The host’s initials were done in a gold filigree style that practically glowed.

The edges were hand painted with 22K gold leaf and had a small, custom cut gem embedded in them. One guy actually got his checked out. It was a pigeon blood ruby. Even though it was small, it was worth a hundred thousand. The host had dropped millions just on the invitations.

It was a massive flex. Every guest was dying to know who was behind it. A few of the bigger families started putting the pieces together.

“So this big shot was hiding in Bellwood? What are they doing in Dalliston all of a sudden?”

“Just a country bumpkin trying to buy their way into our circle. They’re trying too hard.”

“Don’t be so sure. That kind of money is hard to ignore.”

“Please, who cares about a little cash?”

Others were more realistic. “The Jacksons are down and everything is up for grabs. This gala is the perfect place to see who’s moving in.”

Everyone had their own reasons, but they all showed up.

Tatiana looked at the RSVPs and wasn’t surprised. Her secretary stood nearby, looking anxious. “Ms. Tatiana, the things they’re saying about you… it’s pretty insulting.”

Tatiana’s lips curled into a smirk. “Let me guess. I’m a country bumpkin? New money?”

The young secretary nodded, terrified her boss was going to blow up.

“It’s fine. I’m not looking for their approval anyway.”

She only had one person in mind. She’d spent a fortune to bait the hook, and now she was just waiting for the fish to bite.

The night of the gala arrived. The sky was pitch black, and the moonlight left a silver trail across the water leading to a massive, glowing cruise ship. The port was jammed with luxury cars.

Guests started boarding, the air filling with the sound of expensive jewelry and small talk. It was a sea of high end champagne and heavy perfumes.
