Who knew what was actually happening with Jasper? He’d been locked up for days with zero visitors allowed. It was enough to drive anyone crazy.

“Grandpa, let’s just have a nice meal today. Stop worrying.”

Gordon managed to push his anxiety aside. He wasn’t going to ruin the kids’ mood.

Tatiana drove them to an old, established restaurant. “I heard the head chef is a descendant of the old royal cooks. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype.”

Gordon shrugged. “Those styles vary a lot. I’ve had it all a thousand times…”

He trailed off, his eyes dimming. It was true. The Jackson family used to keep several chefs on staff, all from prestigious lineages, just to serve him. He’d always been a picky eater with very specific tastes.

But since the family estate was seized, he’d let all the staff go. He was alone now. These days, he didn’t even have an appetite, let alone the right to be picky. The drop in his lifestyle was staggering.

The two kids felt the shift in his mood. They leaned in on either side of him, offering silent comfort.

Gordon forced a smile, his eyes shimmering. “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”

Tatiana pressed her lips together and parked the car. “We’re here.”

When they entered the private room and Gordon saw the birthday spread laid out on the table, he understood immediately.

“You guys…”

“Grandpa, just sit down.”

The old man never imagined they’d actually remember his eightieth birthday. He hadn’t told a soul because he didn’t want to be a bother.

“Great-Grandpa! Sit here!”

Hubert pulled Gordon over to the head of the table. Ann reached out, grabbing a large longevity peach bun with both hands and holding it out to him.

“Here, Great-Grandpa!”

“Thank you, Ann. I’m so happy.”

Tatiana signaled the servers to start. Dish after dish of symbolic birthday foods arrived, almost all of them Gordon’s favorites. It was clearly planned with a lot of care.

Gordon looked at Tatiana in shock. “How did you how did you know?”

The chef was worried you wouldn’t like the food wherever you went next. He told me everything liked, and I wrote it down”

“Grandpa, I’ve already hired him back. From now on, you can eat his cooking whenever you want.”

“Why bother? The Jackson family is gone…”

Gordon looked at her, then at the two children. The tension in his brow finally softened.

“Eat up, Great-Grandpa! I’ll get that for you!”

With the kids chirping away, the atmosphere turned warm and lively. Once the meal was winding down, the two little ones jumped off their chairs.

“Great-Grandpa! We have presents!”

Even Tatiana put down her fork, curious to see what they’d come up with. The gifts had been delivered to the restaurant earlier. Staff pushed in two carts covered with black cloths.

Gordon’s interest was piqued.

Hubert ran to his gift first and cleared his throat. “Ta-da! Happy birthday, Great-Grandpa!”

He ripped the cloth away, revealing a wheelchair. A black wheelchair. One that had been personally “enhanced” by Hubert.

He started his sales pitch immediately. “Great-Grandpa, this thing is incredible! At full throttle, it can hir 100 kilometers per hour! If you fall into water, it triggers an anti-drowning system, airbags pop out and self-inflate. It even has a turbo-booster so you can drive it on water…”

Tatiana was speechless. Is that even a wheelchair anymore?
