“Morning, everyone.” “Morning, Arden.” Everyone greeted her in return.

No one said a word to Dorian. No one even looked at him. He didn’t seem to mind–just walked over and took his seat at the table like he was used to it.
The moment he sat down, Theresa turned to him. “Dorian, what happened to your neck? That scratch looks nasty.”
Arden instinctively glanced up. There was a red mark on his Adam’s apple–deep and fresh.
A scratch trailed along his neck. Her face flushed red in an instant.
She knew exactly where that came from. That red mark–she’d bitten him, furious at how rough he was. They’d already gone at it for two hours in bed, two or three times, and this man still had the energy to keep going. In the shower, he got even worse. She begged him to stop, but he wouldn’t. So she bit him in frustration. He had let out a sharp gasp, his Adam’s apple jerking as he swallowed, those eyes burning with something feral.
She dropped her head and focused on eating.
Theresa gave her a side glance. As someone who’d been through this before, she immediately recognized the signs. She didn’t press–just gave Arden a knowing look.
Everyone else at the table was an adult. They got it. They glanced at Arden, then at Dorian, and quickly changed the subject.
After breakfast, just as Arden stood up, Eugenia called for the maid to bring out a lunchbox. “I had the chef make something fresh,” she said, handing it over. “Take it to work for lunch.”
It was already packed, so Arden took it without hesitation and thanked her. It was heavier than expected. The lunchbox itself was pretty solid.
Theresa noticed Dorian walking ahead with his hands in his pockets. She called out, “Dorian, help Arden carry that, it’s too heavy.”
He turned around.
Given how pleased he’d been with her last night, he was in a particularly generous mood this morning. He looked at Arden and said, “Well? Bring it over. I’ll carry it.”
But Arden didn’t budge. Instead, she asked, “Grandma, is George not around today? I was thinking I’d just ride with him.”
Dorian had been smiling. Not anymore. His whole face darkened in a second. “You’re riding

with me.”
“Wait, what?” She blinked. “I don’t think that’s a good idea…”
He tugged at his tie, visibly irritated. “Why not?”

“If people see me getting out of your car, they’ll talk. I mean, Mr. Vale, you’re technically my boss now. We’re supposed to be strangers at work, remember?”
Gideon glanced at his son. Yeah, keep hiding your marriage. Now your own wife won’t even call you by name. She’s out here calling you ‘Mr. Vale. Serves you right.
Dorian pulled out his phone and made a call. “George? Head over to Cassian’s office. Pick him up and bring him to Vale Group.”
Then he turned back to Arden, cool as ice. “George isn’t available. He’s busy.”
Wow. Really? I’m sitting right here. I heard that. You’re literally making up errands to get rid of him.
Dorian checked his watch. “You coming or not? We’re cutting it close. First day and you’re already going to be late? Might as well dock your pay.”
Arden glanced at her phone, shot him a glare, then sighed and followed him out the door. As they left, she waved politely behind her. “Bye, everyone.”
Dorian walked ahead, lunchbox in hand. Lucien was already waiting by the car.
When he spotted the two of them, he hurried to open the door. Once they were inside, Lucien glanced at the rearview mirror.
Well, somebody looksveryrefreshed this morning.
He glanced at Arden. Mystery solved. As long as she’s around, our guy’s basically glowing. Last week. when she wasn’t here, he looked like a walking corpse. Dark circles, zero energy, the whole deal.
Arden pressed herself against the window, face turned away, dead silent.
Dorian pulled out his laptop, started reviewing documents, but kept sneaking glances at her. She was sitting so far over she was basically hugging the car door.
“Arden,” he said.
She didn’t turn around. “Yeah?”
Her voice was stiff. Her eyes still didn’t meet his. “You scared of me?”
“No.”

Right then, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Eugenia. “Sweetheart, I had the chef pack lunch for you and Dorian today. Go eat with him at his office. It’s spacious.”
Eat with him? Not happening.
But she typed back sweetly anyway, “Okay, Grandma.”
They were one turn away from the company when Arden suddenly spoke up, “Lucien, can you stop here?”
Dorian snapped his laptop shut. “We’re not there yet.”
“That’s the point,” she said. “If I get out of your car right in front of the building, people are going to talk.”
He narrowed his eyes at her. “What, am I some dirty little secret?”
She didn’t even blink. “I am.”
Dorian was speechless.
“Lucien, please just stop,” she said, reaching for the door handle.
Lucien glanced at Dorian. “Drive to the front,” Dorian said.
“No. I’m getting out now. Let me out.”
