Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Seraphina’s POV

After coming back to the Blade Pack villa that Mortimer and I shared, I took a shower.

Since Mortimer absolutely hated anyone intruding on his personal space, it was usually just the two of us in the house.

The pack’s omega maids only came by to cook our meals and clean. Right now, house felt dead and cold.

I sat on the couch and put on a comedy show.

the empty

But an overwhelming wave of exhaustion quickly washed over me. Before I knew it, I had drifted off to sleep.

I didn’t know how much time passed before I jolted awake.

The suffocating despair of my dream-of being buried under thousands of tons of snow at the bottom of an abyss-drowned me like a tidal wave.

My chest heaved as I gasped for air.

Suddenly, a sharp sting in my fingertips yanked me right back to reality, pulling me out of the avalanche nightmare.

By the dim light of the wall lamp, I looked down. I realized I had been struggling so hard in my sleep that my nails had dug deep into the couch, snapping one of them clean off.

A faint line of blood was oozing from the broken nail bed.

I frowned, sighed in frustration, and got up to head to the cabinet where we kept the first-aid

r

kit.

I had just pulled out some iodine swabs to treat the wound when I heard the lock turning at the front door.

I instinctively looked over and saw Mortimer walking in. He was holding a fancy cake box.

The moment our eyes met, a silent tension spread across the spacious living room. It carried a heavy, awkward vibe we’d never had between us before.

Eventually, I was the first to look away. “You’re back,” I said calmly.

I didn’t drop everything and run over to take his coat or get his slippers ready the second I heard him, like I had for the past three years.

I just gave him a polite greeting, looked away, and slowly went back to disinfecting my finger.

Mortimer walked over to me. “What happened to your finger?”

“I accidentally broke a nail. It’s nothing.”

Once I finished cleaning it, I turned around, only to have a small cake box thrust in front of me. It was the same one he’d brought in. I looked up at him in confusion.

Mortimer looked away, seeming a bit awkward. “I noticed you like desserts… I picked this up for you on my way back.”

I honestly didn’t expect this high-and-mighty Alpha to notice such small details.

If this were the old me, my eyes would have lit up with joy. I would’ve eagerly taken it, tasted a bite right in front of him, and praised him from the bottom of my heart for being so thoughtful.

But right now? I felt absolutely nothing.

I forced a polite, textbook smile and took the box. “Thanks.”

Then, I casually set the cake on the dining table next to me without a second glance.

Mortimer stood there, staring at me for a long moment.

Finally, he couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you going to try it?”

I was just about to head to the bathroom to wash up for bed, but at his question, I stopped in my tracks.

“Oh. Sure,” I murmured, reaching over to open the box.

I picked up the little spoon it came with and cut off a small piece. I was just about to put it in my mouth when I saw the silvergrass in the filling. My hand froze in mid-air.

I stared blankly at the silvergrass.

Every single piece was the exact same length, perfectly measured out as if with a ruler, without a millimeter of error.

It was obvious a lot of care went into making this cake.

Anyone else would probably feel like it’d be an insult to the baker not to take a bite.

But right now, as I stared unblinking at the silvergrass, I felt like the cake was mocking me.

It was mocking the fact that after three years of being mated, I couldn’t even get a fraction of my mate’s attention or care.

My wolf is allergic to silvergrass. He’s known this since the day we mated.

That’s exactly why there hasn’t been a single blade of silvergrass in the Alpha’s villa for the past three years.

Mortimer seemed to notice my weird expression. He followed my gaze, and a second later, the color drained from his face.

He opened his mouth, and for the first time, his voice carried a dry sense of panic.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know…”

He trailed off, staring at my face with panic in his eyes.

I wasn’t mad. I just put the spoon down.

Keeping my tone as light as possible, I said, “It’s fine. Guess I’m just missing out.”

“Sera…” Mortimer started to say, but I cut him off.
