His footsteps echoed in the empty lot–a lonely, rhythmic sound.
Then he nearly walked into someone.
Trista was leaning against the wall in her white lab coat, a stack of patient files tucked under her arm.
She didn’t move. She just let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
“Alpha Mortimer.” She spat the title like it was an insult. “Fancy meeting you at the emergency entrance. Again.”
She looked past him toward Vivian’s room and her smirk sharpened.
“You really are… dedicated. I’ll give you that.”
She stepped into his space, her voice turning into a jagged edge. “Your own mate is drowning in a PR nightmare and you’re nowhere to be found. But the second the ‘Childhood Friend’ gets a scratch? You’re the first one through the door like a hero.”
Trista’s blood was boiling.
She’d read the reports on Alaska. She’d seen the footage.
Seraphina had almost died in a glacier crack while this man was playing house with another woman. 1
Mortimer’s eyes flashed gold.
Barton was snarling, his predatory ego bristling at being dressed down by a pack outsider.
But he held it back.
He knew Trista was one of the few people Seraphina actually trusted.
“…I’m here for other reasons,” he muttered.
Even as he said it, he felt the pathetic weakness of the excuse.
Trista rolled her eyes.
She’d only meant to stick the knife in and leave; she didn’t expect a reply from a man who usually treated everyone like dust under his boots.
But here he was, explaining himself. To her.
She shoved her hands into her pockets and tilted her head.
“The whole city knows about your mess with Vivian. Why start apologizing now?”
Her eyes were full of pure, unadulterated disgust.
“Besides, you’re talking to the wrong person. Save the excuses for Sera. They’re wasted on me.”
She turned to walk away.
“Trista.”
She stopped and looked back.
Mortimer was standing under the harsh light, his jaw locked so tight the muscles were bulging. He looked like he was fighting a war with his own pride.
“What now?” Trista snapped.

Chapter 106
Third Person’s PQV
Ten seconds of dead silence.
Finally, Mortimer spoke. His voice was a low, jagged rasp, like he was dragging the words over broken glass. “That man she’s seeing… how long has it been?”
Trista froze. She blinked, sure she’d misheard him.
“…Excuse me?”
It took two seconds for her brain to catch up, and when it did, she went from confused to livid in a heartbeat. “Mortimer, you’ve spent three years wrapped around another woman, and now you’re trying to flip the script? You’re actually trying to drag Sera’s name through the mud?”
“”Dash’.” Mortimer spat the name out like a curse.
The rage on Trista’s face hit a brick wall.
“The man named Dash,” Mortimer repeated. His face was as dark as a canyon before a blizzard. He said the name with a low, rhythmic growl, the sound of a predator grinding bone.
Trista’s shock lasted exactly three seconds.
Then, something else flickered in her eyes.
She crossed her arms and leaned against a stone pillar, her expression shifting from anger to pure, unadulterated amusement- the look of someone watching a high-budget comedy unfold in real-time.
“So you finally figured it out?” she asked.
She watched the way his jaw ticked, the muscle jumping under the skin from the sheer tension. She felt a sudden, sharp spike of vindictive joy.
“If you already know about him, why are you asking me?” Her voice was light, airy, and completely indifferent.
Mortimer’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned a ghostly white, the veins on the back of his hands bulging.
His golden eyes were dark with a manic intensity as he locked onto her face “How long? How long have they been…, together?”
Trista actually rolled her eyes. “You want the truth? Ask Sera. Why are you coming to an outsider for the toa?”
She turned and started to walk away.
But after a few paces, she stopped.
She looked back at the Alpha standing under the harsh clinic lights like a man on a desert island. For once, her voice lost its jagged edge, replaced by a cold, heavy seriousness. “Mortimer, if you don’t love her, just break the bond and let her go. It’s better for everyone.”
“Who says I don’t-“The denial hit the back of his throat and died there, choked off by an invisible hand.
He set his mouth in a hard line and glared at her. After a long beat, he managed a stiff, petty retort. “This is between me and my mate. Stay out of it. Maybe worry about your own mess with Wilmot first.”
He threw the insult over his shoulder and marched off, his stride so fast it looked like he was fleeing a crime scene.
He looked like a man terrified that if he stayed one second longer, he’d hear the one thing he couldn’t handle: that the mating was truly over.

In the back of the sedan, George the driver caught a glimpse of his boss in the rearview mirror.
The air in the car was leaden, a suffocating wave of Alpha aura that felt like a physical weight.
George’s palms were slick with sweat against the steering wheel.
Mortimer leaned back into the leather, pressing his palms against his throbbing temples. He closed his eyes and breathed out
three words. “To the villa.”
Thirty minutes later, the car pulled up in front of the house
The home with Seraphina.
