Mortimer ripped open the master wardrobe. He knew Seraphina hadn’t slept in this room for months, but the reality of it still

hit him like a bucket of ice water

His own clothes hung there in a row-charcoal, black, navy-a monochrome graveyard of expensive suits.

Next to them was a massive, yawning gap where her light colored dresses used to be.

The empty hangers swayed slightly on the rod, the faint metallic clink-clink-clink sounding like a chorus of tiny, mocking laughs.

He spun around and lunged for the nightstand, pulling out the bottom drawer.

The velvet ring box was there. He opened it, and her diamond ring stared back at him, catching a sliver of pale light.

He remembered the day she’d taken it off. She’d told him the clinic had strict rules about jewelry during surgery. It was supposed to be temporary.

But he remembered now. Before, no matter how long the surgery, that ring was back on her finger the second she scrubbed out.

When exactly had she stopped putting it back on?

Mortimer picked up the ring. The metal was freezing.

He squeezed it in his fist until the band bit into his palm, leaving a jagged mark in his skin.

He bolted out of the master suite and shoved open the door to the guest room.

He stopped at the threshold.

The bed was made with military precision-hospital corners, perfectly fluffed pillows, zero indentations.

The Moonlight Orchid she’d tended to for two years was gone from the windowsill. Her nightlight was gone. The closet was cracked open, revealing a void so absolute not a single stray hair remained.

He tore through the rest of the house-the study, the cabinets, the bathroom.

He was moving like a cornered predator looking for an exit, his breathing turning into a heavy, ragged labor. By the time he hit the last cupboard, his hands just… dropped.

Nothing.

Every trace of Seraphina had been scrubbed from the house.

He didn’t know when she’d done it. He didn’t know how she’d managed to erase three years of her life so quietly, one item at a time. He didn’t even know what her face looked like the last time she’d closed that front door.

Mortimer stood in the center of the silent living room, clutching the only thing she’d left behind: the ring.

Moonlight bled across the bare dirt on the terrace, casting a cold, white shadow at his feet.

“She’s really gone?” he whispered to the empty air.

The ache in his chest was no longer a dull throb.

It was a poisoned vine, wrapping around his heart and squeezing until he couldn’t stand.

Her presence had been like a dormant injury-something he’d ignored until the moment it became a terminal wound.

He slumped into the sofa, his chest tight with a panic he didn’t have a name for.

With trembling fingers, he pulled out his phone and dialed the number he knew by heart.

Across town, Seraphina had just brought Dash home from the pet center.

The Golden Retriever was in peak form, his coat glowing under the apartment lights.

“Dash, this is home now. Do you like it?”

Dash let out a happy, rhythmic woof and licked her palm before flopping onto the floor to demand a belly rub.

Seraphina was laughing when the phone buzzed, cutting through the warmth like a blade.

She saw the caller ID. The smile vanished.

She hit accept. “Yes?”
