Chapter 136
Third Person’s PQV
“This is the chef’s signature disin Crispy golden shrimp.”
Mortimer tried to make his voice sound casual even a little desperate to please. “You always loved seafood. Have some.”
Seraphina looked at the shrimp.
It was perfectly battered in a thick egg wash, fried to a golden crunch. In any other context, it would have been tempting.
But right now, in her eyes, that golden hue looked like a death warrant.
“Hey, are you trying to commit a homicide?” Velda slammed her hand on the table, the sound like a gunshot. “Do you seriously not know that Sera is deathly allergic to eggs?” 1
Mortimer’s hand froze mid-air. The entire room hit ‘pause.’
The smug, helpful smile he’d been trying to maintain cracked and hung on his face like a broken mask.
He turned his head, looking at Seraphina with eyes full of absolute, panicked confusion.
Inside his mind, Barton felt like he’d been doused in liquid nitrogen. The wolf let out a sharp, terrified whimper.
“L… I didn’t know…” he stammered. His voice was dry, cracking under the weight of the public humiliation.
The memory of the silvergrass cake flashed in his mind.
That day, she hadn’t made a scene either. She’d just quietly mentioned her ‘bad luck.’
That quiet acceptance was starting to feel a lot more terrifying than a shouted insult.
“Of course you didn’t!” Velda was on a roll, her words hitting like a machine gun. “You only remember what your little Vivi likes. Sera’s favorites? Her allergies? When have you ever given a damn?”
Susan reached under the table and gave Velda’s leg a brutal pinch, shooting her a ‘shut up before he flips the table’ look.
Velda huffed and stuffed a piece of meat into her mouth, silenced but glowing with spite.
Mortimer didn’t fight back. He just stared at the shrimp, his expression looking more like a funeral than a dinner.
Finally, Seraphina let out a small, weary sigh. “It’s fine. It’s not a big deal. People forget things. Let’s just eat ”
“Right, exactly! No big deal!” Her uncle jumped in, sweating. He still needed Mortimer to invest in his gallery; he had to pick a
side.
He let out a forced, jagged laugh. “Even mates mix things up sometimes. I forget what Felicity is allergic to every other week. Totally normal, Mortimer. Don’t sweat it, haha.”
His laugh died a lonely death in the frozen silence of the dining room.
Mortimer looked at the egg-battered shrimp and felt like his throat was closing up. It wasn’t the allergy-it was the shame.
Felicity set her silver knife down, trying to smooth things over. “Everyone, relax. Even the most perfectly mated mates don’t share a single brain. Sera isn’t holding a grudge, Mortimer, so get over it. You look like you lost your Alpha status on the way to the table.”
Seraphina looked up and offered Felicity a flawless, professional smile.
She truly wasn’t angry. Why would she be?

The man was about to be scrubbed from her soul in thirty days. Whether he remembered her allergies or her name didn’t matter
anymore.
Getting angry was a sign that she still cared. Right now, she was just a contractor finishing a shift.
“Please, don’t stop on my account. The grilled abalone is incredible,” Seraphina said, acting like the perfect guest. She sliced her food with surgical grace.
She didn’t have a problem with most of the pack; there was no reason to be rude to Susan or Edwin just because Mortimer was a disaster.
“Exactly. Eat up while it’s hot. The chef worked all day on this,” Susan said, signaling the servers to keep the courses moving.
The tension seemed to pass-or at least, everyone pretended it did.
The clinking of silverware returned, and the chatter pivoted to pack gossip.
