Chapter 137
Third Person’s PQV
Mortimer saw it-the way she kept checking her watch, the restless energy vibrating under her skin.
He remembered the voice on the phone. She’d told that “Dash” guy she’d be back soon.
So that was it? She couldn’t even handle a few hours with her own family because she was so desperate to get back to him?
The jealousy in his gut felt like acid.
As Seraphina glanced at her wrist for the third time in ten minutes, he spoke up, his voice tight. “We haven’t been back to the manor in ages. We’re staying the night.”
“No!” The refusal was immediate. Explosive.
Dash couldn’t be without her for that long.
If she didn’t show up tonight, he’d spiral into a total mess.
Mortimer’s brow furrowed.
The sheer bluntness of her rejection stung more than he expected. Inside his head, Barton let out a low, pathetic whimper— giving voice to the hurt Mortimer was too proud to show.
The rest of the family went silent, eyes darting between them.
“Come on, Sera,” Edwin said, his tone softening. “You’ve been a stranger lately. Stay, play a game of chess with the old man, and sleep in a real bed for once.”
Seraphina looked torn, but she held her ground. “Grandfather, I’m so sorry, but I really can’t stay tonight. I’m off this weekend -I’ll come spend the whole day with you then, I promise.”
“And I’ll bring Dash with me,” she thought. “You’ll love him way more than Mortimer does.”
Edwin caught the hard “no” in her eyes. He was a man of power, but he wasn’t a tyrant.
He shrugged. “Fine. I won’t chain you here. Sit for a few more minutes and then you two head out.”
Mortimer shot his grandfather a look of pure betrayal. That’s it? No back-up?
But Edwin just stared back-You’re the one who can’t keep his mate interested, kid. Don’t look at me.
Felicity, sensing an opportunity to play peacemaker, straightened her back.
“Sera, staying one night won’t kill you. Mortimer can drive you to work in the morning.”
She thought she was helping. She thought she was being the supportive aunt.
“Honestly, I don’t even know why you’re so obsessed with that job. It’s not like the pack can’t afford you. You’ve been mated for almost three years and still no pups? Edwin is dying for a great-grandchild, you know.”
She turned to Edwin with a syrupy smile. “Isn’t that right, Dad?”
Edwin did want a legacy, but he wasn’t a fossil. He knew better than to demand a womb from a woman who was clearly halfway out the door.
He cut Felicity a lethal look. “Mortimer and Seraphina have their own plans. Keep your nose out of their business.”
“Dad! I’m just being a concerned aunt!”

“Heh,” Edwin barked. “Vernon isn’t even panicking about being a grandfather yet, so why are you doing backflips over it?”
Felicity flushed, looking humiliated.
She tried to say more, but her husband nudged her, pointing a subtle finger toward Mortimer.
Mortimer looked… strange. He didn’t look angry. He looked paralyzed. Awkward. Almost ashamed.
“Oh god,” Felicity thought, her mind jumping to the worst-case scenario. “Is Mortimer… broken? Did I just bring up kids when the poor guy can’t perform? Yikes. Wrong move.”
Mortimer had no idea his aunt was diagnosing his “equipment.” He was stuck on the word “pups.”
Three years.
They’d shared a bed. They weren’t virgins.
But he’d made a conscious, cold-blooded choice to never cross that final line of intimacy.
He’d told himself that if they stayed “physical” but not “mated,” it would be easier to walk away when the contract was up. 1
He’d convinced himself he was being the rational one, the one in control of his primal instincts.
