Chapter 1381
Third Person’s PQV
Felicity’s face locked up, her high born scent spiking with defensive panic. “We… we’re DINKS! Double income, no kids! It’s a lifestyle choice, okay? We aren’t having them!”
Seraphina just offered her a sweet, razor-thin smile.
Her clear eyes were empty of warmth, sending a message as loud as a gunshot, “Mind your own business, Auntie.”
Felicity choked on her own saliva. Just as she was about to start a screaming match, a low, authoritative rasp cut her off from across the room.
“Coincidentally, Seraphina and I are planning the same thing. So don’t lose any sleep over it.”
It was Mortimer. The aura of an Alpha flooded the drawing room in a suffocating wave.
In his mind, Barton let out a low, territorial warning.
Mortimer leaned back, his eyes tracing the clean line of Seraphina’s jaw, a toxic mix of self-loathing and desperation burning in
his chest.
On the other side of the table, Velda stuffed a lamb chop into her mouth and leaned toward her mother, whispering at a volume the entire room could hear. “Luna Seraphina doesn’t want his kids, and Mortimer is just trying to save face. 1
Mortimer heard it.
He had to pretend he didn’t.
That arrow went straight through the center of his remaining pride, leaving a jagged wound.
Seraphina humored Edwin for another five minutes before setting her porcelain cup down with an elegant click. “Grandfather, I should get moving. I have a shift change with the night crew first thing in the morning.”
Edwin hadn’t run the territory for forty years by being blind. He knew a fake excuse when he heard one.
But he just let out a heavy sigh. “Fine. Mortimer, drive her home.”
“Alright,” Seraphina said, wasting no time as she bolted upright. “We’ll take our leave then.”
She gave the elders a polite nod, then shot Mortimer a look that said “move your ass.”
Mortimer’s gut was twisting with a dark, heavy resentment, but his body moved automatically.
He took her Burberry trench coat from the maid, shook it out, and draped it over her shoulders with practiced ease.
“Goodnight, Grandfather,” he said.
Before she could step away, his long arm snaked around her waist, locking her flush against his ribs. His voice dropped into a deep, domestic purr for the audience. “Let’s go, baby. Time to head home.”
Seraphina’s spine went rigid.
Her brow furrowed, her muscles tightening as she tried to peel herself out of his iron grip.
“Don’t move,” Mortimer murmured, his voice a hot breath against her ear as he tightened his hold.
“If Grandfather thinks we’re icy, he’ll lock us in a room ‘to fix our communication’ before midnight. You want to risk that?”
Seraphina stopped fighting instantly.

“Damn him.”
She allowed herself to be maneuvered down the steps, moving like a beautiful, stiff wax statue until they passed the outer security perimeter.
The second they were out of the guards line of sight, she took a sharp step back. “Hands off. We’re done.”
For once, Mortimer didn’t push it.
He let his hand drop, though his palm felt empty without her warmth.
The moment she hit the passenger seat, Seraphina checked her watch for the thirteenth time. “Step on it, please.”
Mortimer fired up the engine, throwing her a sideways look that could have melted bulletproof glass. “You’re in that much of a hurry? Is that Dash guy really that codependent?”
Seraphina buckled her seatbelt, her response a masterclass in checking out.
“Dash is sensitive. If I’m gone too long, his separation anxiety flares up. Can you just drive fast, please?”
Hearing that raw, protective tenderness wasted on some “nobody” made the pine scent in Mortimer’s car go completely sour.
Driven by a streak of pure, juvenile spite, he slammed on the brakes and brought the high-performance car down to a pathetic twelve miles an hour.
Seraphina watched the mansions crawling past the window. Her patience hit zero. She turned her head, her voice deadpan. ” Mortimer. Move the car.”
Mortimer stared straight ahead, his face dark, adjusting his cuffs. “Hand injury is acting up. Can’t accelerate safely.”
“Since when do you use your hands to press the gas pedal?”
Seraphina took a deep breath, swallowing the urge to roll her eyes into the back of her skull.
She wasn’t going to argue logic with an Alpha throwing a tantrum. “Fine. Pull over. I’ll drive.”
Mortimer was speechless.
His jaw was clamped shut so hard the muscle was twitching.
“Actually, just drop me at the next intersection,” Seraphina said, her tone light and casual. “It’s a gated community, but I can walk to the main road and call an Uber.”
“SERAPHINA!” Mortimer took two ragged breaths, but the jealousy in his lungs finally burned through is remaining sanity. He brought his open palm down against the steering wheel with a violent “CRACK”.
His voice shook, laced with a desperate, pathetic edge of rejection he couldn’t hide. “Do you have a pulse?! I am your legal husband under the high laws! Can you not give me even a fraction of a percent of the patience you waste on him?!”
