Chapter 144
Third Person’s PQV
Mortimer froze on the spot.
He didn’t just feel betrayed by his mate anymore-he felt like his most trusted inner circle had just blindsided him with a rusty shiv.
Without saying a word, he grabbed a bottle of vodka off the marble table, tilted his head back, and started chugging it like it was
water.
“Whoa, Morty! Slow down, man, that’s ninety-proof!”
Humphrey lunged forward, trying to grab the bottle. “Besides, what’s the big deal? So Seraphina kept a side-piece on the low. Look at Vivian-you’re basically doing the same thing with her. People in our tax bracket always have a sweetheart or two on the side. Seraphina never bitched about you bankrolling Vivian before, did she?!
The air in the booth turned to ice.
Mortimer stopped drinking.
He slowly lowered the bottle, his wolf eyes burning red from the alcohol as he locked his gaze onto Humphrey’s face. It was the kind of dark, murderous look that made your spine go numb.
Humphrey shifted in his seat, suddenly very uncomfortable. He swallowed hard. “M-Mortimer… why are you looking at me like that?”
“You think Vivian is my side-piece?”
“Uh… yeah? Isn’t she?” Humphrey scratched his head, the picture of pure, unadulterated stupidity. “I always just assumed you were keeping her. I mean, you’ve never given any other female wolf a blank check the way you do with Vivian.”
Humphrey thought he was just being an honest bro.
Was he wrong?
No way. If they weren’t sleeping together, why were they always so touchy-feely?
But as Mortimer’s face turned from pale to pure charcoal, and his Alpha aura started suffocating the entire booth, Humphrey finally realized he had walked into a minefield.
He started rubbing his head, realizing for the first time in his life that he might need to buy a brain.
“Is… is that a topic we aren’t supposed to bring up?”
Sitting in the shadow of the booth, Wilmot watched this idiot with a look of utter exhaustion.
Back in the day, Humphrey was the only guy who never thought Mortimer and Vivian were crossing the line.
Wilmot used to think it was just because Humphrey had known Vivian longer, so his personal bias made him blind to how much shit Seraphina had to swallow.
But now he realized he was wrong.
Humphrey wasn’t playing favorites. He was just genuinely brain-dead.
He honestly believed that in their elite circle, keeping a mistress on the side was just a standard perk of the job.
Randall threw a sympathetic hand onto Humphrey’s shoulder, leaning in to whisper-yell in his ear: “Jesus Christ, man! Everyone knows that shit, but you don’t say it to his face, you dumbass!”

“Marty always defended Vivian in broad daylight, so I figured he didn’t give a shit what Seraphina thought,” Humphrey said, sounding like the most innocent guy in the world. “It’s not like they actually hooked up.”
Randall’s eyelid twitched violently.
“Do you seriously think an Alpha’s hearing is defective at this distance?!” Randall thought.
“This guy is a lost cause.”
No wonder Alina only loved his black card and nothing else while he still carried her around calling her ‘babe.’
Mortimer sat there, forced to listen to these two idiots dissecting his relationship with Vivian like he wasn’t even in the room.
Was he invisible to them, or did they think he was already dead?
“It’s not like they actually hooked up.”
The phrase made Mortimer’s chest twist with pure rage.
He had just given Vivian a little extra slack. The favors and protection he provided-things he considered harmless handouts- were just his way of paying her back for saving his life years ago! Why the hell did everyone assume their hands were dirty?!
Did his life, and the debt his dead mother owed, mean less than the corporate perks and privileges he threw at the Davis family?!
So this was why Seraphina never believed he was clean?
A massive, crushing wave of exhaustion hit him.
Everyone was looking at him through a dirty lens. Even his own bros thought he was trying to get into Vivian’s pants.
After a long silence, he gritted his teeth and let out a bitter, mocking laugh. “If you all thought that, why the hell didn’t I just mate with Vivian in the first place?!”
“Yeah, why didn’t you marry her?” Humphrey blurted out automatically.
The only reward he got was a look from Mortimer that suggested he was about to be ripped limb from limb on the spot.
Finally, Wilmot-who was also dealing with a single-life crisis-couldn’t take the drama anymore and broke it up. “Alright, both of you shut the hell up. Morty, we know you don’t look at Vivian that way.”
Mortimer kept his face dark and didn’t say another word. He just held onto his bottle, taking one heavy, silent gulp after another.
“But wait…” Humphrey just wouldn’t let it go, leaning back in. “Aren’t we all gathered here tonight to help Morty pull some strings and get Vivian out of the lockup?”
Mortimer whipped his head around, spitting the words right through his clenched teeth, “Who the fuck told you I was going to bail out Vivian tonight?”
Humphrey blinked, totally lost.
Randall slammed his hand on his knee. “I knew it! I told you he wasn’t! If Mort wanted to pull someone out, what precinct would dare to hold her? Why would he need us to sit here and brainstorm?”
“Morty is so relatable tonight,” Humphrey whispered into Randall’s ear.
