Chapter 184
Third Person’s POV
Seeing that her father had no real counterargument, Vivian’s expression softened.
“Dad, there has to be another reason for this,” she said. “Maybe your friend is just trying to scare you. Let’s wait a little longer. The advance payment might clear tomorrow.”
Connor was still uneasy, but he didn’t have any other options right now.
Over the years, the Davis family had been so spoiled by the Craig Corporation’s protection that even the slightest sign of trouble sent him into a panic.
He was like a low-ranking, fringe werewolf who had gotten used to living off the scraps of a powerful Alpha-suddenly faced with the threat of exile, he paced around anxiously, wondering if he had done something wrong to piss the Alpha off.
After rationalizing it to himself, Connor felt a lot better.
“Fine. The Craig Corporation’s anniversary gala is the day after tomorrow anyway. We’ll feel out Mortimer’s attitude when we go.”
With that self-comforting logic, the Davis family finally relaxed again.
Vivian went back to her room and threw herself heavily onto her plush bed.
Even though she had acted so confident down in the living room, once it was quiet, her mind uncontrollably flashed back to those dolled-up female secretaries in the Craig Corporation’s executive suite.
The way those women looked at Mortimer-they looked like they wanted to throw themselves at him.
Once the seed of doubt was planted, it grew like crazy, feeling like countless ants gnawing away at her sanity.
“No, I can’t just sit here and do nothing.”
Vivian sat up abruptly, grabbed her phone, and decided to test the waters with Mortimer like she always did.
As long as he gently coaxed her, it would prove she was just overthinking things.
Meanwhile, outside the Craig Corporation headquarters.
Mortimer had just wrapped up his workday, striding out of the building surrounded by bodyguards and top executives.
The evening breeze blew away a bit of his exhaustion. Just as he walked over to his car and was about to get in, the phone in his pocket started buzzing.
He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and saw it was Vivian.
Almost instantly, a heavy wave of annoyance and impatience flashed across his face.
Without a second of hesitation, he hit the reject button.
Unwilling to give up-or perhaps simply unable to believe he had declined her call-Vivian immediately dialed him right back.
This time, Mortimer didn’t just hang up on her. With a freezing expression, he swiftly dragged Vivian’s number straight to his block list. 1
The movement was clean and decisive, holding absolutely zero trace of his former indulgence.
On the other end of the line, Vivian stared at her phone in disbelief as the busy tone beeped relentlessly, her eyes wide with shock.

“Martimer actually ignored my call?”
Refusing to accept it, she dialed his number again. This time, a cold, automated female voice answered.
“The number you are trying to reach is currently busy.”
Hearing this, Vivian smiled in relief, as if she’d just grabbed a lifeline. “Oh, Mortimer just had another call, that’s why he hung up on me. I shouldn’t bother him when he’s busy.
She told herself this to feel a little better, desperately maintaining the illusion that Mortimer was still the man who catered to her every whim.
Ten minutes later, Vivian couldn’t wait any longer and called him again. But she was thet with the exact same automated voice.
Vivian’s face visibly darkened, though she kept trying to comfort herself.
“How is he still on the phone? He must be stuck in some complicated international conference call…”
Desperate to confirm her theory, she gritted her teeth, found Tade’s number, and dialed.
It rang for a long time before he finally picked up. Tade’s voice was strictly professional and extremely distant. “Miss Davis. How can I help you?”
“Tade, what is Mortimer doing? Why is his line constantly busy? Patch me through to him right now, or get him to pick up!” Vivian demanded, putting on her usual bossy, arrogant attitude.
“I’m sorry, Miss Davis,” Tade said, completely devoid of emotion. “The CEO has already left the office for the day. He gave strict orders not to take any personal calls tonight. I have no right to interfere with his schedule, nor can I transfer your call.”
“You’re lying! Why wouldn’t he take my call? Who do you think you are, blowing me off like this?! Put him on the phone right now!” Vivian shrieked, burning with anger.
“Miss Davis, I have work to do. If there’s no official business, I’m going to hang up now.” Without giving her a chance to throw another tantrum, Tade ended the call.
Listening to the dead dial tone, Vivian completely lost it.
