Chapter 204
Third Person’s POV
At the bar.
“What’s going on with Mortimer? He won’t say a word, just sitting here drowning his sorrows. This can’t be good,” Humphrey muttered, leaning in close to Randall and keeping his voice low.
After coming back from the cafe the other day, he had told Alina about Seraphina keeping a “little puppy” at home, only to get thoroughly mocked and scolded by her.
Alina had pointed out that Mortimer treated Vivian like a kept canary. She bluntly said that if she were Seraphina, she would have gone out and found a new lover too, adding that men shouldn’t have such blatant double standards.
Humphrey had felt pretty uncomfortable hearing that; he couldn’t help but feel like Alina was harboring some resentment toward him as well.
Later, when the misunderstanding was cleared up and they realized Seraphina was actually raising a literal pet dog, he thought of Alina’s phrase again: Don’t have double standards.
Mortimer had kept and indulged another omega for a decade. So what if Seraphina kept a dog?
But after the misunderstanding had been cleared up, Mortimer was clearly in a fantastic mood, parading around with that little puppy every single day. So why was he back to looking this utterly devastated today, like he’d just been abandoned by the entire pack?
“Sera won’t let me keep Dash anymore,” Mortimer said hoarsely. He slammed his liquor bottle hard onto the table in front of him, his eyes filled with absolute defeat.
“That’s it?” Humphrey blinked in surprise. “If she won’t let you, she won’t let you.”
“Is it really worth making such a huge fuss and drinking yourself into a stupor over it?”
But Humphrey only dared to mutter that in his head. After all, Mortimer was currently radiating the highly irritable,
aggressively suppressed aura of a top-tier Alpha. If Humphrey said it to his face, he was genuinely afraid he wouldn’t make it out alive.
Randall didn’t catch the true despair hidden in Mortimer’s words either.
He said carelessly, “Who knew Mortimer loved dogs so much? It’s no big deal, man. If the Luna won’t let you keep Dash, you can take my dog, Killer, for a few days. Killer is super cute too.”
Humphrey nodded along. “Yeah, exactly.”
Sitting to the side, Wilmot silently rolled his eyes.
Chloe was truly blessed to have a brother and a mate like these two idiots.
Then again, Chloe herself probably wasn’t completely normal either-naming a fluffy, snow-white Shih Tzu that looked like a delicate little princess “Killer” wasn’t exactly something a normal person would do.
Mortimer completely ignored them, continuing to silently chug his liquor.
Wilmot didn’t try to stop him; he just watched him drink himself into a stupor.
This was entirely his own doing. He couldn’t blame anyone else.
If he had been able to keep raising Dash, maybe he could have used the excuse of taking care of the dog to keep interacting with Seraphina.

But now that Seraphina wouldn’t even let him touch her pet dog, the chances of repairing their hanging-by-a-thread mating bond were even slimmer.
Right then, Humphrey’s phone on the table suddenly buzzed.
“Why is Vivian calling me at this hour?” He pulled out his phone, feeling a bit confused where he saw the caller ID, as it wasn’t the number Vivian usually used,
He answered the call, standing up and walking over to a relatively quiet corner of the bar. “Hello? Vivian, did you need me?”
“Humph…” On the other end of the line, Vivian was sobbing so hard she was practically hyperventilating, which gave Humphrey a start.
“Vivian, what’s wrong?…What? Mortimer is ignoring you?” Humphrey said, glancing back at the booth where Mortimer was still drowning his sorrows.
He lowered his voice and said, “Vivian, Mortimer is really pissed off right now, So you shouldn’t bother him at a time like this.”
Vivian’s voice paused slightly on the other end, catching onto the underlying implication.
“Humph, Mortimer is with you right now, isn’t he? He’s blocked every single one of my numbers! Can you pass the phone to him? Just let me say a few words to him, please?”
“Huh? Mortimer blocked you? It’s that serious?”
Humphrey scratched his head. “Did you step over his bottom line again or something? With how much Mortimer used to indulge you, how could he possibly block you?”
Vivian couldn’t be bothered to waste her breath on Humphrey. Her tone carried her habitual urgency and impatience. “Stop asking so many questions. Just give the phone to Mortimer!”
Standing in the corner, Humphrey looked back at Mortimer’s dark face, which looked like it was one second away from a feral
shift.
