Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 207

Chapter 207

Third Person’s POV

Mortimer absentmindedly forced down two bites of breakfast before getting out of bed, opening his hospital room door, and walking out.

“Alpha, where are you going? If you need something done, just give me the order. Please, go back to bed and lie down,” Tade urged anxiously.

Mortimer ignored him. Wearing only his hospital gown, he kept walking straight ahead. Tade could only frown and hurry after

him.

A few minutes later, Mortimer appeared outside Seraphina’s consultation room.

But when he saw a completely unfamiliar doctor sitting at her desk, he froze.

“Is Seraphina not on shift today?”

The attending doctor recognized Mortimer. Seeing him in a hospital gown, he looked both surprised and confused. “You didn’t know? Seraphina doesn’t work here anymore.”

The doctor’s words completely drained whatever color was left on Mortimer’s already pale face.

“What do you mean? What do you mean she doesn’t work here anymore? Where did she go?”

Everything had been fine. Why would she suddenly resign?

“Why did she leave without saying a word? Not even a heads-up?”

The doctor was slightly startled by Mortimer’s intense reaction and quickly tried to reassure him. “Alpha Mortimer, please don’t worry. Seraphina just went to the Shadowfang Academy to substitute in the Healing Department for a while. She’ll be back.”

“To the Shadowfang Academy?” Mortimer murmured under his breath.

“Yeah, it was arranged by the hospital administration. Didn’t Seraphina tell you?”

Didn’t Seraphina tell you?

Didn’t Seraphina tell you?

Didn’t Seraphina tell you?

Mortimer said nothing.

The doctor’s expression looked incredibly sincere.

But that single question echoed in Mortimer’s ears over and over again, dripping with absolute mockery.

Right. He had literally drank himself into gastric bleeding, and she hadn’t even thought about coming to see him. Why on earth would she bother telling him about a simple job transfer?

His wolf let out a low, desolate whine in his mind.

Tade stood silently beside Alpha Mortimer.

Oh crap. Mortimer looked like he was on the verge of a complete mental breakdown. His aura dropping in the air was suffocating.

“No! If something happens to Mortimer, who am I going to collect my million-dollar annual salary from?!” 1

With that thought, Tade shivered hard. He stepped up beside Mortimer and said carefully, “Alpha, let’s head back to the room so

you can rest. I’ll call Luna Seraphina and ask her about Dash.”

This time, Mortimer was surprisingly obedient. He turned around in silence and walked back to his hospital room.

But the moment he sat on the edge of the bed, his gaze locked dead onto Tade. His eyes carried a desperate, impatient eagerness, and even his usually calm, dark eyes were glowing faintly with the golden light of an anxious wolf.

Silence.

If he didn’t know for a fact that his boss’s sexual orientation was strictly straight, being stared at with such burning intensity would definitely give a guy the wrong idea.

Muttering internally, Tade pulled out his phone and dialed Seraphina’s number.

As Mortimer’s core confidant, his rank within the pack was very high, and his attitude toward Seraphina had always been strictly respectful.

Compared to childhood friends like Humphrey-who constantly accommodated Vivian with zero boundaries-Seraphina was much more willing to talk to this competent, proper beta.

As expected, the phone only rang twice before it was picked up.

“Tade, what’s up?” Seraphina’s cool, clear voice came through the speaker.

The instant he heard his mate’s voice, the wolf inside Mortimer let out a grieved, desperately yearning whimper from the depths of his soul.

Almost completely on reflex, he snatched the phone right out of Tade’s hand and pressed it urgently to his ear. Even his voice trembled. “Sera, it’s me… please, just listen to me…”

However, the second the person on the other end heard his voice, the line fell dead silent.

Seraphina didn’t hang up, but she didn’t utter a single syllable either.

A violent spiritual backlash slammed into him, making his face turn paper-white as a wave of agonizing cramps churned his bleeding stomach.

Mortimer let out a pathetic, muffled groan. He knew that if he didn’t let go right now, Seraphina would absolutely cut the call.

He could only squeeze his eyes shut in pain. Forcing a bitter, self-deprecating smile, he extremely reluctantly shoved the phone back into Tade’s hand, mouthing for him to continue.

Tade cast Mortimer a highly sympathetic look before hurriedly plastering a polite smile on his face. He get straight to the point. “Luna, good morning. It’s like this: Alpha Mortimer was hospitalized last night with gastric bleeding, so he didn’t go pick up Dash today. I wanted to ask, should I head over and pick Dash up now?”

Tade deliberately emphasized the words “hospitalized with gastric bleeding,” trying to play the pity card for Mortimer and scrape up a tiny bit of sympathy from Seraphina.

But the person on the other end completely ignored the update on Mortimer’s condition, speaking as if she hadn’t even heard it. “No need to trouble yourself, Tade. My schedule is pretty open from now on, so I can just take care of Dash myself. You go back

to your work.”

“Oh… I see. Alright then, I won’t bother you any further, Luna.”

“Alright. Goodbye, Tade.”

The moment Tade hung up, he looked up to see Mortimer glaring at him darkly.

“Alpha, why… why are you looking at me like that?”
