Chapter 236
Third Person’s POV
“C-Can… can you let go of me now?” Vivian was trembling from the pain. Tears and shot streaked down her face, leaving her in
a miserable state.
Caldwell, however, had no intention of going easy on her.
Without the slightest warning, he released her wrist.
Vivian had been desperately pulling away. The sudden loss of resistance threw her completely off balance. With a startled yelp, she stumbled and crashed heavily onto the freezing, hard floor.
Her bare palms scraped harshly against the rough concrete, leaving several raw, bloody abrasions. She sucked in a sharp breath at the sting.
But after seeing just how ruthless Caldwell could be, she no longer dared provoke either him or Seraphina.
Gritting her teeth, Vivian struggled to her feet. She shot Seraphina one last venomous glare before clutching her throbbing wrist and hurrying out of the academy hall as fast as she could.
Once she was gone, the crowd of students gradually dispersed, murmuring among themselves.
“That influencer is unbelievable. She actually made up something like that about Seraphina. I wanted to slap her myself.”
“She even said Dash deserved to die. If anything, Seraphina went too easy on her.”
“Forget the influencer. Doesn’t Alpha Mortimer seem kind of strange? She begged a few times, and he immediately caved. Are we really supposed to believe she’s been chasing him all this time without him feeling anything?”
“I seriously thought he’d stand up for Seraphina. What a disappointment.”
Their voices gradually faded as they walked away.
As she listened to their comments, Seraphina’s brows knitted tighter, worry creeping into her eyes.
“Sera?” Seeing her standing there in a daze, Caldwell stepped in front of her and bent down until they were at eye level. “Toasty?

Seraphina finally came back to her senses. Her eyes landed on Caldwell, and she froze for a second.
Caldwell was leaning forward with his hands resting on his knees, smiling at her warmly. The icy hostility he’d shown Vivian moments earlier had completely disappeared.
Remembering what she’d just heard, Seraphina asked instinctively, “What did you just call me?”
“Toasty,” Caldwell replied with a smile.
Seraphina shuddered. “Please don’t. That’s way too mushy.”
She’d stopped letting even her parents call her that after she started high school. Every time she heard the nickname, she wanted to disappear.
“Really?” Caldwell chuckled, his eyes soft with affection. “Well, whenever I call my Toasty that, it comes running straight into
my arms.”
Seraphina knew he was talking about his Devon cat. Whenever he spoke of it, his eyes would soften with love, as though his whole heart were melting.
He really loved cats just as much as she loved Dash.

The realization made her admire him a little more-anyone who loved animals was bound to have a tender heart.
“It’s a baby, but I’m not, Seraphina protested. “Anyway, you’re not allowed to call me that. Especially not in public.”
Caldwell raised both hands in surrender. “All right. Whatever Toasty says goes…” He caught himself with a grin. “I mean, whatever Seraphina says goes.”
The teasing smile faded into something more serious. “What was wrong just now? You were frowning. Is something on your mind?”
Remembering why she’d zoned out, Seraphina shook her head.
But the students’ comments had lodged themselves in her mind. If Mortimer really stepped in and got Lillian released… How was she supposed to go up against him?
Would Dash end up suffering all over again?
The thought alone made her stomach knot.
“It’s nothing,” she said after a pause. “I was just wondering how far Mortimer is willing to go for Vivian.”
She couldn’t help recalling that night, when Mortimer had sworn he’d make things right for Dash and deal with the Davis family himself. Now the promise seemed almost laughable.
Thankfully, she hadn’t trusted him again. Otherwise, she’d only have made a fool of herself one more time.
Caldwell didn’t know what she was thinking. His eyes dimmed slightly at her words. “Does it still bother you that Mortimer keeps protecting Vivian?”
“Of course,” Seraphina replied. Preoccupied with her own worries, she failed to notice the hint of disappointment in his voice.
