Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 242

Chapter 242

Third Person’s POV

Seraphina looked at him in surprise. “Don’t you have your own office?”

Unlike Seraphina, Caldwell was a specially appointed associate professor at Shadowfang Academy. Before he arrived, the school had already arranged a private office for him.

Caldwell placed his lesson plans on the desk and sighed. “When you’re alone all day, even the air feels still. It’s a little too quiet.”

His gaze fell on Seraphina. “You don’t welcome me?”

Of course, Seraphina didn’t mind. Although the office was shared by three professors, it was spacious enough that one more person wouldn’t make much difference.

The other two professors usually spent most of their time in the lab or working on their research projects, so they rarely stayed

in the office.

“You’re welcome to stay.”

Around noon, someone gently knocked on the office door.

“Ms. Hale?”

Seraphina looked up and was surprised to see who it was.

Bauer slowly walked in. He was an elderly but still imposing high-ranking lone wolf.

Seraphina stood up and offered him her seat. “Professor, what brings you here?”

“I came to see how my prized student was settling in. Are you getting used to working here?” Bauer asked with a smile. However, his sharp wolf eyes narrowed slightly when they landed on Caldwell.

Seraphina was about to say she was doing fine when Caldwell smiled and greeted him. “Professor, it’s been a long time.”

Seraphina froze. “Professor?”

Bauer patted Caldwell’s solid shoulder and said to Seraphina, “I was going to introduce you two, but it looks like you’ve already

met.”

Caldwell nodded, his meaningful gaze falling on Seraphina’s surprised expression. “Yes. I’ve known her for a long time.”

r The slight emphasis in his voice carried a hint of a he-wolf’s natural tenderness and possessiveness.

Having lived through enough himself, Bauer immediately sensed something was off. He glanced deeply at Caldwell but said nothing.

Only then did Seraphina remember that Bauer had mentioned a few days ago that one of his most talented students had just returned and would be teaching at Shadowfang Academy.

“So the student Professor Bauer mentioned was you.” Her face lit up with realization.

A smile lingered in Caldwell’s eyes as he nodded at her. “That’s right. I look forward to working with you at the academy.”

He extended his right hand toward her.

Seraphina quickly reached out and shook his hand. Their palms touched briefly. The faint warmth between them made Caldwell’s gaze darken slightly. With a serious expression, Seraphina said, “It’s nice to meet you.”

Caldwell smiled.

“Caldwell, come outside with me for a moment.” Bauer stood there with his hands clasped behind his back.

Caldwell glanced at him, nodded, and followed him out. The smile on his face faded.

At the end of the corridor, away from the crowd, Bauer stopped.

“Professor, what did you want to talk about?” Caldwell walked beside him. The relaxed expression he had shown in front of Seraphina was gone, replaced by the calmness and seriousness of an Alpha.

Bauer glanced at him. “Back then, I asked you to stay in Los Angeles, but you insisted on leaving. Why the sudden change of heart?”

Caldwell paused. The cold, stern expression softened.

Half joking and half serious, he said, “If I told you I came back to find my destined mate and settle down, would you believe me, Professor?”

Bauer said nothing. He simply looked at him with the wisdom of someone who had seen it all. “Couldn’t you find someone suitable in another city?”

Caldwell smiled. “I could. But none of them compare to someone in Los Angeles.”

Bauer snorted and lightly punched his arm, the impact making a dull sound. “Is it because no one else compares to Los Angeles, or because no one compares to the person you’ve already engraved in your heart?”

Caldwell froze. The wolf within him grew restless.
