Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 252

Chapter 252

Third Person’s POV

After a while, he stood up. His fingertips left faint claw marks on the sofa armrest as he picked up the agreement and walked toward the study.

“I’ll go make some changes to the agreement,” he said, lowering his head as he entered the room without looking back.

Seraphina didn’t ask any questions. She simply sat quietly in the living room, but she couldn’t help noticing the faint sound of his controlled breathing from the study as he slowly turned the pages.

Soon, Mortimer came out holding a newly printed agreement, the edges of the paper still warm from his heated hands.

“I made a few modifications. Take a look, and if everything’s fine, then…”

He paused, his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, as if saying those words had taken everything out of him, but he gritted his teeth and managed to continue. “If everything’s fine, just sign it.”

By the end, his voice was tinged with hoarseness, and even the fur along the back of his neck bristled slightly.

Seraphina had never cared about his money. He could change the agreement however he wanted; the worst-case scenario was that she got nothing. It wasn’t as if he would ever come to her asking for money.

Although Mortimer had failed her emotionally, as the leader of the pack, he was not the kind who would use such tactics against

her.

Knowing that, Seraphina barely glanced at the revised terms before signing her name. But the moment the pen touched the paper, she felt his gaze lock onto her wrist, lingering on the steady beat of her pulse.

“Tomorrow morning at nine, see you at the registry,” she said.

“Alright,” Mortimer replied, his voice rough and low. Heaviness pressed against his chest.

Seraphina opened the door and left without looking back. The moment the door closed, he instinctively breathed in, trying to

catch the last trace of her scent.

Monday, nine o’clock. Seraphina waited punctually at the entrance. In the morning light, her shadow stretched long, and there was no familiar pack scent accompanying her anymore.

Three years ago, she had stood in this very place, waiting to complete her bond with Mortimer. Back then, her heart had been filled with excitement and tenderness. She still remembered the gentle bite he left on her nape outside the registry–the sacred

mark that symbolized a mate bond.

Now, everything was already different.

Mortimer didn’t keep her waiting. Soon after she arrived, his familiar black sedan appeared at the registry gates. With the window lowered halfway, she caught sight of his face and realized he looked much thinner than he had three years ago.

“Have you been waiting long?” He came toward her, repeating the same words he had said back then. Even the controlled calm in his voice hadn’t changed.

Seraphina shook her head. “It’s fine, just a few minutes. Let’s go in.”

Mortimer nodded, and the two walked together toward the service window.

His steps slowed slightly, as if he intentionally stayed a step behind her, letting himself catch the faint trace of her scent carried by the wind.

Astaff member followed the procedure and attempted mediation. The registry official was a retired pack elder, his nostrils flaring slightly as he immediately sensed the lingering bond between them. “Are you both really sure? The mate bond means more than just a piece of paper. If you can find a way to ease things, perhaps you could give each other some time…”

Seraphina cut off his rehearsed words with a faint apologetic smile. “Thank you, but we’ve thought it through very clearly.”

The staff member looked at Mortimer-compared to Seraphina’s decisive and even somewhat relaxed demeanor, he appeared haggard and exhausted.

With the staff member watching him, Mortimer forced himself to nod. His hand clenched around the edge of the counter, his knuckles whitening from the pressure. “Yeah.”

The staff member sighed, catching the bitter scent of his suppressed emotions. They didn’t try to persuade the two of them any

further.

After that, the entire process went smoothly.

Mortimer barely spoke, but he cooperated with Seraphina throughout. Each time he signed his name, his jaw clenched tighter, as if fighting the instinct to mark her and hold on to the bond between them.

“If there are no issues, please sign here.”

After they finished signing, the staff member reminded them, “After the one-month waiting period, come back to receive the official documents. If either of you changes your mind during this time, you can apply for cancellation before the deadline.”

As he said this, he glanced at Mortimer several times with an unreadable expression.

Mortimer didn’t respond. He simply lowered his gaze and gently placed the pen he had just used back on the counter, its surface still warm from his fingertips.

He seemed distracted, and it was unclear whether he’d caught the staff member’s words. Worried that he had, Seraphina quickly stood and said, “Let’s go. There are others waiting.”

“Alright,” Mortimer replied in a low voice. He stood up and left with Seraphina.
