Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Third Person’s POV

That was Wilmot from the Blood Moon Pack, one of Mortimer’s close friends.

Mortimer instinctively denied it. “No.”

Wilmot let out a light chuckle. “You really messed up this time. Even if Vivian was actually kidnapped, she has her parents and the rest of the Blade Pack. There was absolutely no need for you to ditch your mate and rush all the way back.

Wilmot’s words made Mortimer frown. A flicker of unease crossed his mind, but he still defended himself. “I explained it to her. She didn’t mind.”

“And if she did mind, would you have stayed with her?” 1

Wilmot’s question hit the nail on the head, leaving Mortimer instantly speechless.

He suddenly remembered the moment he rushed out of the hotel and Seraphina called out to him.

She had just chased after him to hand him a pair of goggles, yet he had scolded her so impatiently, implying she was just being jealous.

Recalling the stunned look on Seraphina’s face, Mortimer’s heart sank.

He knew full well that even if she had begged him to stay, he still would have abandoned her

and run back.

He always habitually chose Vivian, putting everyone and everything else second to her.

Faced with Wilmot’s question, he couldn’t find a single word to argue back.

“Seraphina is even-tempered. She acts like nothing bothers her,” Wilmot continued. “But she has feelings, just like anyone else. And the people who seem like they don’t care about anything? Once you push them past their limit, there’s no coming back from it.” a

Wilmot kept talking, but Mortimer remained silent.

He wanted to say that Seraphina didn’t mind because theirs was just a contract marriage.

Once the three years were up, they would divorce as planned.

But now, the thought of divorcing her filled him with a sudden sense of panic and rejection.

He pushed down that weird bout of anxiety and let out a soft scoff, instinctively retorting, ” You’re overreacting.”

“Have you really been completely blind to how out of line you’ve been?” Wilmot looked at him, a trace of disbelief in his eyes,

“Fine, let’s say Seraphina didn’t mind you running back to save Vivian. But it turned out Vivian wasn’t even kidnapped. Why didn’t you go back to your mate? Why did you take Vivian on a trip instead? Do you honestly think Seraphina doesn’t have a heart, or do you think it’s made of steel and can’t be broken?”

Mortimer opened his mouth. His confidence faltered, but he still said, “Vivian was having a soul-fracture episode. I just wanted to help her clear her head.

“Did she have no one else? Why did a married man have to do it?” 2

Mortimer frowned. This time, he had absolutely no comeback.

He couldn’t exactly say that Vivian only wanted him there, could he?

Even though he had a clear conscience and his relationship with Vivian was entirely platonic, saying it out loud felt incredibly awkward. 2

Seeing his reaction, Wilmot didn’t push it any further.

He’d said his piece. If Mortimer kept instinctively denying everything, he was only going to make himself miserable in the long run.

“Think it over,” Wilmot said, patting Mortimer on the shoulder. He stood up and walked away, leaving Mortimer to his thoughts.

Mortimer sat in the corner, nursing a glass of whiskey. He took a sip every now and then, completely distracted, consumed by an indescribable sense of frustration.

Seraphina had definitely been acting out of character these past few days. She barely spoke.

Was she… actually mad at him?

No way. Seraphina isn’t the type to hold a grudge over little things.

Mortimer kept telling himself this, yet he couldn’t figure out where that sudden, inexplicable panic was coming from.

Toward the end of the night, someone had a random idea and suggested, “Let’s play a game.’

“What kind of game?”

The guy who brought it up slammed his phone onto the table.

“Everyone put your phones right here. Whoever gets a call from their mate telling them to come home gets to leave first. If your phone doesn’t ring, you don’t get to leave early.”

“Is that even a bet? Morty is going to win for sure. Luna Seraphina is always the first one to call and check in.”

Saying this, the guy looked over at Mortimer and waved him in. “Morty, come on, get in on this.”

Mortimer kept a poker face and muttered, “Boring,” but he still pulled his phone out and tossed it onto the table.

For whatever reason, the corners of his mouth couldn’t help but twitch up into a slight smirk.

It didn’t take long before a ringtone broke the silence on the table.

“Here we go! Morty, pick it up.”
