Chapter 88

Seraphina’s POV
I stepped up to the reporter who’d been barking the loudest and looked him straight in the eye. “I’ve already said it: once the hospital completes the internal review on the patient’s complications, we’ll issue a formal statement. As for my private life…”
My gaze turned lethal. “Neither you nor your ‘public’ has a right to it. It’s called privacy. Look it up.”
“You-” He sputtered, but I didn’t give him the floor.
“And a word for the person who cut you a check to cause this scene: the truth always comes out Tell her to back off while she still has a reputation to save. This won’t end well for her.”
The paparazzi traded uneasy looks
I caught the flicker of guilt in their eyes-the classic tell of a paid hit job..
“You… you’re delusional. We’re here for justice, not a paycheck. Don’t go throwing around slander charges unless you want to get sued for real.”
“We both know who’s lying. Now, get out.”
On cue, hospital security finally swarmed the hall.
They didn’t negotiate; they just hauled the cameras and the microphones toward the exit.
The hall went quiet, but I knew the damage was done. Every word Professor Bauer and I had said would be chopped up, twisted, and served as fresh meat for the internet’s next trial by fire.
I looked at my mentor. His face was a blotchy, angry red, and his breathing was heavy.
“I’m sorry, Professor,” I said, the guilt hitting me. “The things they’re going to print… I never wanted to drag you or the Academy into this mess.”
“Hah!” Bauer let out a jagged, defiant snort. “You think I’m scared of those bottom-feeders? If I were twenty years younger, I’d have shifted and shredded their mics for them.”
He stood there with his hands on his hips, looking more offended than I was.
With his wide, intense eyes and huffing chest, he reminded me of a pissed off cartoon owl-half-ridiculous, half-terrifying.
“My mate is the only reason I haven’t leveled this hallway,” he muttered, his aggressive aura finally dialing back at the mention of his mate.
The staff, who had been holding their breath, suddenly erupted into cheers. “Go, Chief!” “That was badass!”
Bauer waved them off, looking a little embarrassed by the fan club. “Back to work! All of you!”
He turned back to me, his tone softening. “Don’t you worry. I’m not letting those trash-pandas touch your career.”
I felt a genuine warmth spread through my chest. “Thank you, Professor.”
“I’ve got the heavy-hitters from cardio coming in to review Rolf’s case. And I’ve already screened your surgical tapes with the board. You were perfect, Sera. This is a setup, and we’re going to find the leak.”
He patted my shoulder, but then his brow hit a hard, angry knot. “But what about the other stuff? Where the hell is Mortimer? His mate is getting crucified in the trends, and he hasn’t even released a pheromone-ping? He’s just letting those Davids- family omegas walk all over you?!”
“That’s it. I’m calling that brat. I never should’ve introduced you to him if this is how he handles a mating.”

Bauer was furing again, his thumb hovering over his phone screen like he wanted to punch through it.
I could smell the sharp, peppery scent of his Alpha rage. He was ready to go to war with Mortimer.
I reached out and gently lowered his hand. “Don’t, Professor. It’s fine. He probably hasn’t even seen the news. Let’s not bother him.”
I’d already laid my cards on the table with Mortimer last night. What was I supposed to do now? Beg for a rescue?
If he stepped up, there were only two ways out.
