Chapter 4

The next day, Charles showed up. He stood in the doorway, his face tight with frustration.

Why didn’t you answer your phone?

Battery died.

Where’s your charger?

Forgot it.

He walked over to the bed and glanced at my IV drip, his expression unreadable.

What did the doctor say?

Infection. Three days admitted.

My mom said she didn’t notice anything wrong

Mmhmm.

She’s getting older, her eyesight isn’t what it used to be-

Mmhmm.

Don’t be mad at her-

Mmhmm.

Charles frowned, irritation creeping into his voice. Is that all you’re going to say? Mmhmm?

I looked up at him, my voice flat. What do you want me to say?

IHe hesitated, searching for words. I know you’re upset.

Okay,

But Vivian, she-

Leave.

What?

I said leave.I turned my head away from him, staring at the wall. I’m tired. I need to rest.

Chapter 4

I’m really tired, Charles.

He stood there for a moment, mouth opening and closing like he wanted to say something, but nothing came out. Finally, he

turned and walked out of the room without another word.

Sophia came out of the bathroom just in time to see him leave, and she let out a cold, bitter laugh.

Girl, what are you going to do?

I didn’t answer right away, my eyes fixed on the ceiling.

Are you thinking about divorce?

I kept staring up at the blank white tiles above me. The baby is only fifteen days old.

So what? You’re just going to let this slide?

I know.I picked up my phone and opened another appCharles’s Uber ridesharing history. Back when I was pregnant, he’d

set it up so I could track his location in case I went into labor and needed to reach him quickly.

I clicked on the history tab and started scrolling through his past trips, one by one, my heart sinking with each entry.

Over the past three months, he’d been to Vivian’s neighborhood fortyseven times.

The longest visit? Eight hours.

That was on a Saturday. He’d told me he was working overtime at the office.

Sophia leaned over to look at the screen, and she immediately let out a string of curses under her breath.

kept scrolling, my hands trembling slightly as I clicked through more entries.

One trip stood out2 AM. He’d arrived at Vivian’s place at two in the morning and didn’t leave until seven.

remembered that night. I’d woken up to use the bathroom and realized he wasn’t in bed. When I called him, he said he was >ulling an allnighter at work, finishing up a presentation.

And I believed him. I actually believed him.

took screenshots of everything and saved them into that same folder I’d created earlier.

Soph.

Yeah?

Help me find a divorce lawyer.

Sophia paused for a second, then a slow smile spread across her face.

Reading History
