Chapter 7
During my vacation, William asked me out to dinner at this new restaurant downtown.
I hesitated for a second, but eventually said yes.
He got excited like a kid, sending me a bunch of emojis: “No backing out!”
“Backing out makes you a puppy!”
I just rolled my eyes and smiled at my phone.
The restaurant was gorgeous–warm lighting casting everything in this golden glow, making William’s eyes look extra bright.
He’d dressed up in black casual wear, hair slicked back showing his forehead. Looked way more dangerously hot than usual.
“Lia, try this.” He cut a piece of grilled salmon and put it on my plate. “Heard it’s their signature dish.”
I was about to thank him when I caught a familiar figure walking through the entrance.
Kai Reynolds.
Hadn’t seen him in months–he’d lost a ton of weight, looked pale as hell.
He spotted me too, froze completely.
Next second, he was walking straight toward our table.
“Lia.” His voice was shaking. “I finally found you!”
William looked confused, glancing between us.
I set down my fork, kept my voice level: “Long time no see.”
Tears suddenly started streaming down Kai’s face.
“Can I talk to you alone? Just five minutes.”
William smoothly stood up.
“You guys chat. I’ll hit the restroom.”
Kai slid into his seat, fingers death–gripping his napkin.
“Lia, I fucked up… I really fucked up.” Tears hitting the table now.
“Olivia… she never actually gave a shit about me.”
“She’s with someone else now, said I was too clingy and annoying…”
I watched him quietly, feeling absolutely nothing.
“So?”

“What’s any of this got to do with me?”
“Can we start over?” He grabbed my hand, fingers ice cold. “I regret everything, Lia.”
“Ive been thinking about you every single day for months…”
I gently pulled my hand back.
“Kai, we’re done.”
“No!” He shook his head frantically. “You still love me, right? You’re just pissed!”
“Sorry, I’m not mad anymore.” I smiled slightly. “Because I stopped caring.”
His face went completely white.
William came back then, carrying two cups of hot coffee.
“For you.” He handed me one, then looked at Kai. “Want some?”
Kai stared at him hard.
Suddenly jumped up, voice sharp: “Who the hell are you?”
William blinked, then smiled: “I’m Lia’s fiancé.”
“We’re getting married soon.”
