Chapter 1
Shortly after my miscarriage, I watched my husband Zachary grab the last package of premium beef and head straight over to his childhood sweetheart, Lorna.
That’s when I asked for a divorce.
For the first time in years, I saw genuine panic in his eyes.
“Jane, wait–that stupid beef doesn’t matter! I swear I’ll never give her anything again…”
I laughed coldly. “You think this is about beef? You picked her over me every single day.”
When word got out that I was leaving, my own children practically threw a party.
They immediately started calling Lorna “Mom” right to my face.
Fine. Whatever.
Still weakened from my miscarriage, I dragged myself to New York with nothing but a suitcase and pure rage as fuel.
Screw the husband. Screw the kids. I was fucking DONE!
Ten years later, I had become a billionaire. Wall Street Journal calls me “The Ice Queen of Finance.” Forbes put me on their cover twice.
Now the two kids and the silver–haired Zachary have to crane their necks up at the TV screen just to catch a glimpse of me.
The bitter wind cut through our apartment as Zachary pushed open the front door, making me shiver under the blanket on our couch.
“I could really use some beef stew right now,” I said quietly.
Zachary paused while shutting the door, forcing an awkward laugh.
“Oh, you hungry? Let me just heat up some of that leftover soup for you.”
I closed my eyes, feeling that familiar knot of frustration tighten in my chest.
Zachary wasn’t stingy–hell, he was generous to a fault. Especially when it came to his precious childhood sweetheart Lorna and her daughter.
But I’d been through this nightmare before, and this time I wasn’t going to be the understanding wife.
“I just had a miscarriage, Zach. I need the protein.”
He went quiet for a beat.
“Right, babe. Tomorrow, okay? I’ll hit the store first thing, grab some beef and make you a stew.”
I gave him a thin smile, knowing how gaunt and pale I must look.
“Why bother? We have beef right here in the fridge.”
The tension crackled between us. He looked away first.
“Jane… I made that beef into stew and gave it to Lorna. You know little Tina’s growing so fast, and it’s tough for Lorna raising her alone…”

I stared at him, and suddenly I could see his face twenty years from now–still making the same damn excuses,
