Chapter 4
I woke up around 12:30 PM to find Zachary cooking for once–five dishes and a soup spread across the kitchen.
Kevin was putting ointment on Sherry’s burn while Zachary set a steaming pot on the table.
He smiled sheepishly at me. “Just finished cooking. Wanted to let you get some rest, so I hadn’t called you for lunch yet.”
I nodded. “Thank you.”
Zachary froze, looking at me anxiously.
“Honey, we’re married… you don’t need to be so formal with me…”
I couldn’t be bothered to respond. The moment I sat down, Kevin started complaining.
“All she does is laze around. Her own daughter gets hurt and she doesn’t even care, making Dad cook all morning.”
I laughed coldly. “What exactly do I owe you ungrateful brats?”
Sherry stared at me, wiping fresh tears. “We don’t like you!”
Zachary slammed his hand on the table. “Where the hell did you learn to talk to your mother like that? Did I raise a couple of brats?”
Kevin and Sherry shut up, but I smirked. “Don’t bother liking me. Soon enough, you won’t have to deal with me at all.”
That got all three of them panicked.
What did I mean by that?
“Zachary, I came to check on Sherry.”
A sweet voice came from the doorway. I turned to see Lorna in a pink wool coat, fair–skinned and delicate–featured, holding hands with an adorable little girl.
“Jane, may I come in?”
She looked at me nervously. I ignored her and started eating.
I had no time for this bitch.
Zachary smiled awkwardly. “Of course. Jane’s not feeling well, don’t take it personally. Come on in.”
Little Tina ran straight to Zachary, who crouched down and scooped her up.
“Did you eat lunch yet, sweetie?”

Tina shook her head, pouting dramatically. “No… Mommy and I were waiting for Uncle Zachary and Sherry and Kevin to come
cook for us…”
Zachary lovingly stroked Tina’s hair.
“Go sit at the table. If you can’t reach something, ask Auntie Jane to help you.”
Tina nodded obediently, climbing onto a chair while glaring at me with obvious hostility.
Meanwhile, Lorna looked at Sherry’s wound with tears in her eyes.
“Jane, girls can’t afford to have scars. You need to watch her diet–no spicy foods, and don’t skip the medication.”
Sherry sniffled on cue. “Mom’s too busy to care. Dad had to cook everything himself today.”
Kevin snorted coldly. “She just said she doesn’t want anything to do with us anymore. Aunt Lorna, why don’t you be our mom
instead?”
Lorna glanced shyly at Zachary. “Oh… I couldn’t possibly…”
I kept eating, not saying a word in protest or anger, which somehow infuriated Zachary even more.
He smacked Kevin on the back of the head. “What the hell is wrong with you?!”
Kevin held his head, defiant. “What did I say wrong? Why’d you hit me?”
Just as Zachary was about to strike again, I felt a sharp pain shoot through my foot. Looking down, I saw little Tina climbing back onto her chair, a smug smile on her face after dropping a nail she’d been hiding under the table.
I slammed my bowl down and yanked the little brat off her chair.
Tina let out a piercing scream. Lorna rushed over, trying to pull her daughter from my grip.
“What are you doing, Jane? How can you hurt a child?”
I grabbed the sobbing Tina by her collar. “Apologize to me! Now!”
Zachary tried to pry my hands away. “Jane Howard, why are you taking it out on a kid?”
I held up my palm, now covered in blood with a nail sticking out of it,
I shook Tina violently, completely losing it. “APOLOGIZE!”
Lorna wailed, “Jane, you’re scaring my daughter!”
Zachary grabbed my wrist in panic. “Jesus, Jane, you’re bleeding! Let go first, we can talk this through!”
Sherry screamed, “Look at her foot! She’s bleeding from her foot!”
