Chapter 3
At first just tired. No appetite. Throwing up constantly.
When I told Garrett, he came back with a bag of pills, told me to take them, then left again. Didn’t even stick around to make sure I was okay.
Wasn’t till the medicine made me feel like absolute hell that dragged myself to the hospital. That’s when I found
out.
“We’re gonna need to run more tests,” the doctor says, frowning hard. “You took way too many antibiotics. Even if you carry to term, there could be issues.”
Two nurses had to carry me out.
I spent six hours outside that exam room–worst six hours of my life.
Hands covered in bruises from pinching myself.
Eyes open, tears streaming.
I kept blaming myself for not realizing sooner.
For not being careful with those pills.
For trusting Garrett when he handed them to me.
“Everything looks okay for now. Come back next month.”
I felt like I could breathe again. Mood lifted. Even ate an extra bowl of rice that night.
Garrett didn’t come home till after midnight–reeking of booze, face bleeding from a gash on his cheek, one eye swollen shut and purple.
“Did you get in a fight?”
He mumbles something I can’t make out and heads straight for the bathroom.
His work phone’s on the bed, buzzing. I pick it up.
[Lauren: Garrett, thank you so much for tonight. My ex would still be harassing me if you hadn’t stepped in.]
[Lauren: I’ve been a wreck. Without you, Zeke and I wouldn have made it. He loves you so much. Keeps asking when Daddy Garrett’s coming over. Garrett… give us a home
A Civing Birth? Congratulations, You’re Single Now
Chapter 3
Words slam into me.
Everything hurts. Like my insides are exploding.
Daddy Garrett.
What’s my kid supposed to call him?
Give them a home.
What about my home?
The home I’ve wanted since I was a kid–a place to feel safe gone.
And ripped apart by Garrett himself.
I bite my tongue, force myself to stay alert. Then start to scroll through everything.
