Chapter 5
At first, Garrett doesn’t see the blood.
All his attention’s on Lauren. Only when she screams does he realize I’m about to collapse.
Swaying, can’t stay upright.
“Cass, how… why are you bleeding so much…”
Blood soaking my dress.
His pants too.
I’m too weak to talk. Go limp in his arms, barely breathing.
Ironic that Lauren’s the one who repeats what he didn’t hear
“Cass said she’s pregnant…”
She’s been through this. Knows what this much blood means.
“Get her to a hospital. Now.”
Gas pedal to the floor–we blow through red light after red light, I lose count.
At the hospital Garrett’s running full speed with me in his arms, crashes straight through the doors.
The faster he moves, the more I bounce around, the more blood keeps coming. Smell ge turning away, covering their faces.

I’m freezing, everything hurts. Curled up against his back, teeth won’t stop chattering–just clicking and clicking together.
I don’t want any of this anymore.
Money, love, home–take it all.
I just want out–want to run so far I can never get hurt again Far from Garrett, far from all this pain.
Doctor’s wheeling me toward the ER when Garrett tries to follow. They’re arguing at the door–takes three, four nurses to finally hold him back while he’s losing it, fighting to get in.
Right before the door closes, our eyes meet.

I grab the doctor’s coat, use every bit of strength I have left:
“Don’t keep it… Get rid of it…”
If it’s born, it’ll just drown in pain like me. I can’t give it the life it deserves.
So please–don’t come.
The doctors around me go quiet. Like my despair’s bleeding into them–every face showing pity.
Everything’s fading. Feels like I’m slipping back into the past-
