Chapter 85
Nathan’s hands were still shaking when he got into his car.
He pulled up Rocco’s number and hit dial before he’d even closed the door.
“Yeah?”
“Rocco.” Nathan’s voice came out tight, clipped, buzzing with barely contained fury. “I need you to do something for me.”
“What kind of something?”
“The kind where a man ends up on the ground regretting every choice he’s ever made.” Nathan gripped the steering wheel with his free hand, knuckles white. “There’s someone I need taught a lesson. A real one. The kind he doesn’t walk away from smiling.”
A low whistle on the other end. “Who pissed you off this bad?”
“You’ll get the details when you need them. Just tell me you’re in.”
Rocco was quiet for a beat. Then: “I’m in. When?”
“Soon. I’ll send you everything.”
Nathan hung up and sat there in the silence of his car, chest heaving, a vicious grin slowly spreading
across his face.
Across town, in the basement level of a converted warehouse in the economic development zone, the air was thick with sweat and adrenaline.
The Pit’s satellite venue-smaller than the main arena, rougher around the edges-was packed tonight. Two heavyweights were going at it in the ring under harsh fluorescent light, and the crowd pressed close, shouting, money changing hands in the gaps between bodies.
Bianca Donovan sat ringside with her legs crossed, a glass of sparkling water sweating in her hand. Her brother Marcus was beside her, leaning forward in his chair, eyes locked on the fight, jaw tight with
focus.
“So,” Bianca said, swirling her glass, “now that the partnership’s locked in, let me tell you something actually interesting.”
Marcus didn’t look at her. “Mm.”
“Aurora’s little boyfriend.” Bianca tilted her head, a slow smile curling her lips. “I didn’t expect him to be
that hot.”
“Mm-hm.”

Marcus’s eyes tracked a right hook that snapped one fighter’s head back. “Good for you”
Bianca’s smile thinned.
She set her glass down with a deliberate clink
“I touched his abs,” she said.
That got half a glance. “What?”
“His abs I put my hand right on them.” She leaned back in her chair, watching her brother’s profile. “Rock
solid. And the power underneath-Marcus, I’m telling you, that man is stronger than you.”
Now Marcus turned. His brow furrowed, and a flash of irritation crossed his face.
“A kept man,” he said flatly, “is stronger than me.”
“I didn’t stutter.”
“Bianca.” He rubbed his jaw, annoyance sharpening his voice. I’ve trained in boxing since I was fifteen. Actual training. Actual coaches. I’ve broken bones in that ring. And you’re telling me some pretty boy who warms Aurora Sinclair’s bed hits harder than I do?”
“I’m telling you what I felt.”
